Designer Sarah Menezes has created a winter set that can be knitted for the whole family. Hat and mittens are available in three sizes: for mom, dad, and child.
The description of the set is translated from the magazine “Let’s Knit”.
Size:
Child (Women, Men)
Head circumference – 50 (55, 60) cm.
Recommended yarn:
Debbie Bliss Rialto DK (100% merino wool; 100 m / 50 grams per skein) – 4 (4, 6) skeins.
Required tools:
Circular needles No. 4, 40 cm long, set of double-pointed needles No. 4, a cable needle for knitting cables, stitch markers, waste yarn, tapestry needle.
Knitting gauge:
35 stitches and 37 rows of cable pattern = 10 cm.

Hat:
Cast on 144 (172, 200) stitches. Mark the beginning of the round with a marker and join the stitches in a circular round.
1st round: *2 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches; repeat from * to the end of the round.
Knit 7 (8, 9) cm in ribbing. In the last round, evenly increase 1 (2, 3) stitch using a make-one increase.
Next round: 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch, *stitches from the 1st row of the cable pattern as per the chart, [1 purl stitch, 1 knit stitch] – 2 times, 1 purl stitch; repeat from * 3 (4, 5) more times, stitches from the 1st row of the cable pattern as per the chart, 1 purl stitch, 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch.
CHART
Knit 40 (48, 56) rounds, continuing to knit the cable pattern as established.
Next round: 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch, place a marker for the new beginning of the round.
Top of the hat:
When the number of stitches decreases to the point where it becomes uncomfortable to knit with circular needles, it is recommended to switch to working with double-pointed needles.
1st round: *stitches of the next row of the cable pattern, 1 purl stitch, 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch, 2 stitches knit together knitwise; repeat from * to the end of the round – there are a total of 140 (168, 196) stitches on the needles.
2nd round: *stitches of the next row of the cable pattern, 1 purl stitch, 1 knit stitch, 2 stitches knit together knitwise; repeat from * to the end of the round – there are a total of 135 (162, 189) stitches on the needles.
3rd round: *stitches of the next row of the cable pattern, 1 purl stitch, 2 stitches knit together knitwise; repeat from * to the end of the round – there are a total of 130 (156, 182) stitches on the needles.
4th round: *stitches of the next row of the cable pattern, 2 stitches knit together knitwise; repeat from * to the end of the round – there are a total of 125 (150, 175) stitches on the needles.
5th round: *knit the first 21 stitches of the cable pattern, knit the next 2 stitches as they lie, 2 stitches knit together knitwise; repeat from * to the end of the round – there are a total of 120 (144, 168) stitches on the needles.

19-20 rounds: *2 stitches knit together knitwise; repeat from * to the end of the round – there are a total of 5 (6, 7) stitches on the needles.
Cut the yarn, leaving a long end. Thread it through the remaining stitches, pull tightly, and secure the yarn.

Mittens:
Cast on 40 (44, 48) stitches on double-pointed needles. Mark the beginning of the round with a marker and join the stitches in a circular round.
1st round: *2 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches; repeat from * to the end of the round.
Knit 7 (8, 9) cm in ribbing.
Next round: 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch, stitches from the 1st row of the cable pattern as per the chart, 1 purl stitch, knit stitches to the end of the round.
This round establishes the position of the cable pattern.
Knit 10 more rounds in the established manner.
Thumb gusset for the left mitten:
1st round: 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch, stitches of the next row of the cable pattern as per the chart, 1 purl stitch, knit stitches to the last 2 stitches, place a marker, make 1 stitch from the yarn over to the left, 1 knit stitch, make 1 stitch from the yarn over to the right, place a marker, 1 knit stitch – there are 42 (46, 50) stitches on the needles.
Thumb gusset for the right mitten:
1st round: 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch, stitches of the next row of the cable pattern as per the chart, 1 purl stitch, 2 knit stitches, place a marker, make 1 stitch from the yarn over to the left, 1 knit stitch, make 1 stitch from the yarn over to the right, place a marker, knit stitches to the end of the round – there are 42 (46, 50) stitches on the needles.
For both mittens:
2nd round: 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch, stitches of the next row of the cable pattern, 1 purl stitch, knit stitches to the end of the round, slipping all markers.
3rd round: 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch, stitches of the next row of the cable pattern, 1 purl stitch, knit stitches to the marker, marker, make 1 stitch from the yarn over to the left, knit stitches to the marker, make 1 stitch from the yarn over to the right, marker, knit stitches to the end of the round – there are 44 (48, 52) stitches on the needles.
Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rounds until there are 13 (15, 17) stitches between the thumb gusset markers.
Next round: knit to the marker, remove the marker, place 13 (15, 17) stitches on waste yarn, remove the marker, cast on 1 stitch on the palm side, 1 knit stitch – there are 40 (44, 48) stitches on the needles.
Continue knitting until 40 (48, 56) rounds of the cable pattern have been completed, finishing on the 8th (16th, 8th) round.
Tip:
Note: where it is not possible to work the cables, knit the stitches as they lie. If forming the tip with cables seems difficult, you can skip the cables and knit knit stitches instead.
Setup round: knit 4 (3, 2) stitches as they lie, place a marker for the new beginning of the round.
Next round: 1 knit stitch, 2 stitches knit together knitwise, 14 (16, 18) stitches of the cable pattern, 2 stitches knit together knitwise, 1 knit stitch, marker, 1 knit stitch, 2 stitches knit together knitwise, 14 (16, 18) knit stitches, 2 stitches knit together knitwise, 1 knit stitch – there are 36 (40, 44) stitches on the needles.
Next round: knit as established.
Next round (decreases): *1 knit stitch, 2 stitches knit together knitwise, knit as established until three stitches before the marker, 2 stitches knit together knitwise, 1 knit stitch, marker, 1 knit stitch, 2 stitches knit together knitwise, knit stitches to the last three stitches, 2 stitches knit together knitwise, 1 knit stitch – there are 32 (36, 40) stitches on the needles.
Next round: knit as established.
Next round (decreases): *1 knit stitch, 2 stitches knit together knitwise, knit stitches as they lie until three stitches before the marker, 2 stitches knit together knitwise, 1 knit stitch, marker; repeat from * one more time.
Repeat the last two rounds until there are 18 (20, 22) stitches remaining on the needles.
