On circular needles #6 cast on 63 stitches. Knit 18 rows of French ribbing

I adjusted the pattern to my liking and knitted in a 1*2 ribbing, as the purl stitches look better to me when there is 1 purl stitch between the twisted knit stitches + 1 setup row

1 setup row: ???? purl, ???? knit, etc. to the end of the row.

2 row: 1 purl, knit the second stitch knitwise through the front loop with the yarn held from bottom to top, without dropping it from the needle, then knit the first stitch as the second, 1 purl, etc. to the end of the row.

3 row: 1 purl, knit the second stitch knitwise through the back loop with the yarn held from top to bottom, without dropping it from the needle, then knit the first stitch as the second. Continue to the end of the row. You should get zigzags 

Repeat for another 16 rows, alternating the 2nd and 3rd rows.

Next, turn the fabric for the cuff (turn the hat inside out and start knitting in the opposite direction), knit 6 rows of ribbing 1*2 with needles #5

Again switch to the pattern and knit the main pattern for 34 rows. If you don’t want the hat to stand up, knit fewer rows, 28-30

Start decreasing every second row
1 row also 35: 1 purl, knit 2 together, 1 purl, knit 2 together, etc. to the end of the row (42 stitches remain)
2 row also 36 as per pattern
3 row also 37: 1 purl and knit 1 together knitwise, etc. to the end of the row (21 stitches remain)
4 row also 38 as per pattern
5 row as 3 row (11 stitches on the needles)
6 row as per pattern and then pull together the 11 stitches with a needle. Weave in the yarn ends. Optionally attach a pom-pom
