The Tartan Hat is knitted in one piece in the round according to the charts for each stated size.

Sizes: 50-52, 52-54, 54-56, 58-60

For a good fit, it's important to choose the right size. The stated sizes correspond to head circumference. If your head circumference is 54 cm, decide what fit you want. Size 52-54 will give a tighter fit, 54-56 – more relaxed.

Yarn: • Aveyla Silky Merino (250 m/100 g, 50% merino wool, 50% mulberry silk) – 1 skein.

Needles: • US 6 (4.0 mm) – 1 pair of 40 cm circular needles; • US 6 (4.0 mm) – 1 set of double-pointed needles for closing the crown, or circular needles with a 100 cm cord for knitting using the “magic loop” method.

Choose needle size individually to achieve the required gauge!

Additional tools: • Stitch marker; • Auxiliary yarn; • Auxiliary needle; • Scissors; • Tapestry needle.

Gauge: 23 sts x 30 rows = 10 x 10 cm in stockinette using US 6 (4.0 mm). Gauge in fabric (in pattern): 26 sts x 36 rows with US 6 (4.0 mm).

To swatch, cast on 30 stitches and knit 40 rows in height in stockinette. Block the swatch, after it dries completely measure the gauge over 10 cm in width and height. Place a ruler across the center of the swatch horizontally and vertically.

Abbreviations:

MNR – marker for the beginning of the row;

knit stitch – knit stitch;

purl stitch – purl stitch;

PЛП – increase of a knit stitch from the bottom loop to the right;

PЛЛ – increase of a knit stitch from the bottom loop to the left;

2 together knitwise left-leaning decrease;

2 together knitwise right-leaning decrease.

Sequence of work

Ribbing (the small rib) The ribbing isn't very tall, but is fairly dense, and is done with the same needle size as the main fabric (if you knit very tightly, use needles 0.5 size larger), as follows. With an extra strand, using US 6 (4.0 mm) needles, cast on 48 (54, 60, 66) stitches (the number of stitches is half of what is needed). Join the knitting in the round and knit 3 rounds in stockinette (Photo 1). Cut the extra yarn, leaving a tail of 10-12 cm. Attach the main yarn and continue in purl stitches (Photo 2). Knit in height 7 rounds of purl stitches (Photo 3). Untie the joining knot and bring both ends (the main and auxiliary thread) to the right side.

Now you need to double the number of stitches as follows: *slip the first stitch – purl – onto the right needle (Photo 4), catch the first purl bump of the main yarn 7 rows below (at the place where it joins with the auxiliary yarn) (Photo 5)*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row (Photos 6, 7).

This row (Photo 8) is indicated on the charts as Row 1. After that, carefully remove the scrap yarn (Photo 9). A neat rolled edge has formed (Photo 10).

2nd row of each chart – the increase row. Increases are made from the purl bump of the stitch in the bottom row on the right side of the main stitch PЛП (Photo 11) or from the left side - PЛЛ (Photo 12). The main stitch is worked after the right increase / before the left increase and is included in the stitch count between increases.

Row 2 should be knitted as follows: 1 knit stitch, place marker, *PЛЛ, 8 (9, 10, 11) knit stitches, PЛЛ (PЛП, PЛЛ, PЛП), 8 (9, 10, 11) knit stitches*, repeat from * to * until the end of this round.

108 (120, 132, 144) stitches on the needles.

Starting from the 3rd row, knit according to the chart for the chosen size. The chart must be read from right to left, bottom to top. Each chart shows 2 pattern repeats across in width; the height is shown in full. In all sizes, the width comprises 6 pattern repeats. Chart elements highlighted in yellow are worked at the junction of two rounds.

Knit the hat according to the chart to the end. Bind off the remaining 6 stitches. Secure the ends. Complete blocking of the finished hat.

Legend:

1️⃣ knit — knit stitch
2️⃣ ■ — purl stitch
3️⃣  — knit stitch worked at the start of the row before the MNR
4️⃣ increase left

— PЛЛ
5️⃣ increase right— PЛП
6️⃣ increase 1 to 2— slip a loop onto the right needle unknitted, yarn behind the work
7️⃣ — cross 2 stitches to the left (slip one stitch onto an auxiliary needle in front of the work, knit 1 stitch, knit the stitch from the auxiliary needle)
8️⃣ — cross 2 stitches to the right (slip one stitch onto an auxiliary needle behind the work, knit 1 stitch, knit the stitch from the auxiliary needle)
9️⃣ — cross 2 stitches to the left at the junction of two rounds (first stitch is the stitch of the current round, second is the stitch of the next round):
 — slip the first stitch onto an auxiliary needle before working, slip the marker, knit 1, return the marker, slip the stitch from the auxiliary needle onto the right needle without knitting it, then knit the stitch that was slipped with a left-leaning using the method described (first knit the stitch to the right, knit the next stitch and pull it through the slipped one)
🔟 slant left— 2 stitches together knitwise with a right-leaning decrease (2 stitches knitted together)

11. slant right

2 stitches together knitwise with a left-leaning decrease (2 stitches knitted together with a left-leaning)
