Mitten knitting starts from cuff to fingers

First, knit the inner mitten (lining), then the outer (top).

Cuff

Cuffs for the right and left mitten are knitted the same way.
The cuff will be knitted on needles No. 2.

Make a provisional cast-on in any method you prefer.

Note that you do not need to pick up an extra stitch for joining in the round.

For size 1:

Cast on 48 stitches and distribute them as follows:
1 needle – 24 sts; 2 needles – 24 sts.
Work the setup row flat, and then after joining in the round knit the cuff to a height of 32 rounds in knit stitches.

For size 2:

Cast on 52 stitches and distribute them as follows:
1 needle – 26 sts; 2 needles – 26 sts.
Work the setup row straight, and then after joining in the round knit the cuff to a height of 32 rounds in knit stitches.

For size 3:

Cast on 56 stitches and distribute them as follows:
1 needle – 28 sts; 2 needles – 28 sts.
Work the setup row straight, and then after joining in the round knit the cuff to a height of 38 rounds in knit stitches.

For size 4:

Cast on 60 stitches and distribute them as follows:
1 needle – 30 sts; 2 needles – 30 sts.
Knit the setup row flat, and then after joining in the round knit the cuff to a height of 38 rounds with knit stitches.

Thumb gusset

From now on we will knit the mittens on size 2.25 needles.

The thumb gusset will be knitted on the stitches of the first needle:
for the right mitten — at the end of the first needle (remember that we are now knitting the inner mitten, and it is knitted in mirror image to the outer mitten),
and for the left mitten — at the beginning of the first needle.

Increase stitches from the stitch of the previous row in every third row for size 1 and in every fourth row for the other sizes.

See how to correctly make increases in the "Knitting Techniques" section, or make increases in any method convenient for you.

Thumb

Sizes 1 / 2 / 3 / 4

Right mitten

We slip off the hand stitches onto a waste yarn as follows:
From the palm side, knit 21/22/23/25 stitches and slip them onto the waste yarn.
Remove the marker (we won't need it anymore).
Knit 14/15/17/19 stitches of the thumb gusset.
Remove the marker (we won't need it anymore).
The remaining stitches on the 1st needle (1/1/2/2 stitches of the palm) and 24/26/28/30 stitches on the 2nd needle
(on the back side) slip onto an extra yarn.
There will remain 14/15/17/19 stitches on the needles.
On the right needle, pick up 2/3/3/3 chain stitches.
There will be 16/18/20/22 stitches on the needles.
Hang the beginning-of-round marker on the right needle and continue knitting in the round
to the necessary height corresponding to the thumb gauge,
not reaching the end by about 3 mm.
Be sure to count the number of rounds you will knit.

Left mitten

We slip off the hand stitches onto a waste yarn as follows:
1 needle – knit 1/1/2/2 stitches and slip it onto the waste yarn.
Remove the marker (we won't need it anymore).
Knit 14/15/17/19 stitches of the thumb gusset.
Remove the marker (we won't need it anymore).
The remaining stitches on the 1st needle 21/22/23/25 stitches of the palm and 24/26/28/30 stitches on the 2nd needle
(on the back side) slip onto an extra yarn.
There will remain 14/15/17/19 stitches on the needles.
On the right needle, pick up 2/3/3/3 chain stitches.
There will be 16/18/20/22 stitches on the needles.
Hang the beginning-of-round marker on the right needle and continue knitting in the round
to the necessary height, corresponding to the thumb gauge,
not reaching the end by about 3 mm.
Be sure to count the number of rounds you will knit.

Before you start the decreases, try on the mitten.

The thumb of the mitten should fit snugly against the finger’s knuckle.
And you also need to redistribute the stitches of the finger.

Decreases for the thumb

For size 1 / 2:
1–2 rounds:
On needle 1 – 1 knit stitch, then knit all stitches until the last 3 stitches remain, then knit 1 stitch.
On needle 2 – repeat from * to *.
The remaining stitches (8/10 stitches) sew with stocking stitch.

For sizes 3 / 4:
1–3 rounds:
On needle 1 – 1 knit stitch, then knit all stitches until the last 3 stitches remain, then knit 1 stitch.
On needle 2 – repeat from * to *.
The remaining stitches (8/10 stitches) sew with stocking stitch.

Returning all stitches from the waste yarn onto the needles in this way, with the ends of the needles facing toward the thumb, we will continue knitting the mitten upward in knit stitches in the round to the necessary height corresponding to the hand-length gauge, not reaching the end by about 2 / 2 / 2.5 / 2.5 cm.

and for the left mitten — at the end of the first needle.

Increase stitches from the stitch of the previous row in every third round for size 1
and in every fourth round for the other sizes.

How to correctly make increases, see the section “Knitting Techniques”
or do increases in any method convenient for you.

Thumb

Size 1 / 2 / 3 / 4

If when knitting small shapes your gauge changes, i.e., you knit tighter,
then knit the thumb on needles No. 2.5.
But if the gauge does not change, then continue knitting with needles No. 2.25.

Right mitten
Stitches for the hand are transferred to waste yarn as follows:
1 needle – knit 1/1/2/2 stitches and slip them onto the waste yarn.
Remove the marker (we won't need it anymore),
knit 14/15/17/19 stitches of the thumb gusset.
Remove the marker (we won't need it anymore).
The remaining stitches on needle 1 (palm) are 21/22/23/25 sts and 24/26/28/30 sts on needle 2 (back of hand).
(on the back) transfer to an extra yarn.
On the needles there will remain 14/15/17/19 sts.
On the right needle pick up 2/3/3/3 chain stitches.
There will be 16/18/20/22 sts on the needles.
Place the start-of-round marker on the right needle and continue knitting in the round
to the necessary height, corresponding to the thumb gauge,
leaving about 3 mm to the end.
Knit the same number of rows as for the inner mitten + 1 row.

Left mitten
Stitches for the hand are transferred to waste yarn as follows:
from the palm side knit 21/22/23/25 stitches and slip them onto the waste yarn.
Remove the marker (we won't need it anymore).
Knit 14/15/17/19 stitches of the thumb gusset.
Remove the marker (we won't need it anymore).
The remaining stitches on needle 1 (1/1/2/2 palm) and 24/26/28/30 sts on needle 2 (back of hand)
(on the back) transfer to an extra yarn.
On the needles there will remain 14/15/17/19 sts.
On the right needle pick up 2/3/3/3 chain stitches.
On the needles there will be 16/18/20/22 sts.
Place the start-of-round marker on the right needle and continue knitting in the round
to the necessary height, corresponding to the thumb gauge,
leaving about 3 mm to the end.
Knit the same number of rows as for the inner mitten + 1 row.

Before starting decreases, try on the mitten.
The thumb of the mitten should fit snugly against the finger’s webbing.
And you also need to redistribute the finger stitches.

For size 1 / 2:
Round 1–2:
1 needle – 1 knit stitch, purl, then knit all stitches not reaching the last 3 stitches, purl, 1 knit stitch;
2 needles – repeat from * to *.
The remaining stitches (8/10 stitches) sew with a knitted seam.

For size 3 / 4:
Round 1–3:
1 needle – 1 knit stitch, purl, then knit all stitches not reaching the last 3 stitches, purl, 1 knit stitch;
2 needles – repeat from * to *.
The remaining stitches (8/10 stitches) sew with a knitted seam.

Having returned all stitches from the waste yarn to the needles in this way,
so that the ends of the needles point toward the thumb,
we will continue knitting the mittens in the round to the necessary height,
corresponding to hand length, leaving about
2 / 2 / 2.5 / 2.5 cm (knit the same number of rows as for the inner mitten + 1 row).
