Tip for the craftswoman: how to take measurements? Before making a pattern, it is essential to take measurements correctly. This is a very responsible stage, as the fit of the garment on the figure depends on how accurately the measurements are taken. The person should stand straight without tensing up. Measurements are taken over underwear; you can wear a light tank top or T-shirt to make it easier to determine the position of the shoulder seam. A lingerie elastic should be tied around the waist to accurately define this line (remember: “where we will make the waist”). The measuring tape should lie snugly but without tension or constriction of the body. Paired measurements (for example, shoulder circumference) are taken on the right side of the body, as it is generally more developed. Body measurements are denoted by capital letters: O — full circumferences; S — half circumferences; W — width; L — length. Indices with capital letters denote the measurement locations, for example, Og — bust circumference. Circumferences are measured fully but recorded and used in calculations at half the size, as the pattern is constructed on half of the figure. So, for pattern construction, we will need the following measurements: Half neck circumference (Ssh) — measured at the neck circumference (Osh) at the base. Half bust circumference (Sg) — measured at the bust circumference (Og) horizontally across the shoulder blades and the protruding points of the bust. Half waist circumference (St) — measured at the waist circumference (Ot) horizontally at the narrowest point of the waist (where the elastic is tied). Half hip circumference (Sb) — measured at the hip circumference (Ob) horizontally around the torso: at the back at the protruding points of the buttocks, and at the front considering the protruding belly. Chest width (Wg) — measured horizontally between the shoulder joints with the torso, the measurement is recorded at half the size. Back width (Ws) — back width is measured horizontally across the shoulder blades between the shoulder joints with the torso, the measurement is recorded at half the size. Back length to waist (Dts) — measured along the spine from the 7th cervical vertebra to the waistband of the elastic. Length of the garment at the back (Di) — measured from the 7th cervical vertebra to the desired length of the garment, holding the measuring tape at the waist. Half shoulder circumference (Sp) — measured at the shoulder circumference with the arm hanging down to the shoulder axis so that the upper edge of the tape touches the back corner of the armpit, the tape closes on the outer surface of the arm. Shoulder slope width (Wp) — measured from the point at the base of the neck to the shoulder point; Sleeve length (Dr) — the measurement is taken simultaneously with the shoulder width measurement, to the desired sleeve length, then the shoulder width is subtracted from it. This method of measuring helps to avoid mistakes.
