How to knit a set-in sleeve Perhaps, set-in sleeves of all kinds encountered in sewing can be knitted with needles: long or short; tapered or, on the contrary, flared at the bottom; straight (tube-shaped) or bell-shaped; with cuffs or turn-ups and many others. Sleeves can be made not only from the bottom up from the wrist - the most common method, but also from the side, from the sleeve seam (crosswise knitting direction). It is possible to knit a set-in sleeve from the top down (from the highest point of the cap), but this is not very convenient. Let's get acquainted with knitting a set-in sleeve that is tapered at the bottom. Set-in sleeve, knitted from the bottom up Calculation and knitting of the sleeve up to the cap (fig. 173). It is faster to calculate for half of the sleeve. Count the number of stitches in the narrowest and widest part of the sleeve: fig. 173 Calculation for knitting the sleeve up to the cap 3 p. x 10 cm = 30 p. (Pg = 3 p.); 3 p. x 18 cm = 54 p. Determine the difference (in stitches) between the wide and narrow parts of the sleeve: 54 p. - 30 p. = 24 p. Measure the distance from the start of the expansion on the sleeve to the start of the cap (34 cm) and divide this number by 24 (the difference in stitches). 34 cm : 24 = 1.4 cm. Count the number of edge stitches in 1.4 cm, in our example there are 3, which corresponds to 6 rows. Therefore, to expand the sleeve, you need to add 1 stitch in every 6th row. Let's consider how to do this better. Cast on the required number of stitches (30 p. x 2 = 60 p.), knit 4 cm of garter stitch and switch to the main pattern. Knit 2-4 rows and make the first increase; at the beginning of the right side row, remove the edge stitch and, making a yarn over (towards yourself), knit the row, at the end of it before the edge stitch, make another yarn over. In the next wrong side row, knit the yarn overs as knit stitches through the back loop. Continue knitting, making similar increases on both sides of the sleeve in every 6th row, until there are 108 stitches on the needle (54 p. x 2 = 108 p.). To keep track of your count, mark the row where you made the increase with a colored thread or pin a marker. These markers will also be useful when making the second sleeve, so do not remove them until you have knitted both sleeves.
