You will need: 650 (750) g of gray yarn Royal Tweed (100% merino wool, 100 m/50 g); straight needles No. 4.5 and No. 5; circular needles No. 4.5; 6 buttons.

Ribbing, needles No. 4.5: edge, 1 purl, * 2 knit, 2 purl, repeat from *, 2 knit, 1 purl, edge. In purl rows, knit all stitches as they appear. All other patterns are knitted with needles No. 5.

Stockinette stitch: knit row - knit stitch, purl row - purl stitch.

Purl stitch: knit row - purl stitch, purl row - knit stitch.

Diamond pattern width 21 sts: knit according to the chart, which shows only knit rows. In purl rows, knit stitches as they appear or as specified. Work rows 1 to 26 once, then repeat rows 3 to 26.

Cable pattern width 16 sts: row 1: knit; row 2 and all purl rows: knit stitches as they appear; row 3: cross 8 knit stitches to the right (= leave 4 sts on a spare needle behind work, knit 4 sts, then knit the stitches from the spare needle), cross 8 knit stitches to the left (= leave 4 sts on a spare needle in front of work, knit 4 sts, then knit the stitches from the spare needle); rows 5 to 12: as rows 1 and 2. Repeat rows 1 to 12.

Average knitting density: 15.5 sts and 19.5 rows = 10 x 10 cm.

Back: cast on 90 (98) sts and knit for the band 10 cm in ribbing. Then distribute the stitches: edge, 1 st in stockinette, 0 (2) sts in purl, 0 (2) sts in stockinette, 1 st in purl, 21 sts of diamond pattern, 2 sts in stockinette, 2 sts in purl, 16 sts of cable pattern, 2 sts in purl, 16 sts of cable pattern, 2 sts in purl, 2 sts in stockinette, 21 sts of diamond pattern, 1 st in purl, 0 (2) sts in stockinette, 0 (2) sts in purl, 1 st in stockinette, edge.

After 31.5 cm = 62 rows (29.5 cm = 58 rows) from the ribbing, bind off 1 x 3 sts for armholes on both sides and in every 2nd row 8 x 1 st = 68 (76) sts. After 58.5 cm = 114 rows from the ribbing, bind off all stitches. The middle 36 (40) sts are for the neckline, with 16 (18) outer stitches for the shoulders.

Right front: cast on 58 (62) sts and knit for the band 10 cm in ribbing, starting with 1 edge and alternating 2 knit, 2 purl, and ending with 1 edge. Then distribute the stitches: edge, * 2 sts in stockinette, 2 sts in purl, repeat from * 2 times, 16 sts of cable pattern, 2 sts in purl, 2 sts in stockinette, 21 sts of diamond pattern, 1 st in purl, 0 (2) sts in stockinette, 0 (2) sts in purl, 2 sts in stockinette, edge.

For the armhole on the left side, make as for the back = 47 (51) sts. After 53.5 cm = 104 rows from the ribbing, bind off 1 x 21 (23) sts from the right side for the neckline, then in every 2nd row 1 x 4, 1 x 3, 1 x 2, and 1 x 1 st. Bind off the remaining 16 (18) sts of the shoulder at the back height.

Left front: knit symmetrically and with 5 buttonholes, making them as follows: bind off 2 sts from the penultimate row of knit sts and re-cast them in the next row. The first buttonhole is made after 10 rows from the start of work, the remaining 4 - at intervals of 20 rows.

Sleeve: cast on 52 (60) sts and knit for the band 5 cm in ribbing, alternating 2 knit, 2 purl between the edges, ending with 2 knit. Then distribute the stitches: edge, * 2 sts in stockinette, 2 sts in purl, repeat from * 1 (2) more times, 16 sts of cable pattern, 2 sts in purl, 16 sts of cable pattern, * 2 sts in purl, 2 sts in stockinette, repeat from * 1 (2) more times, edge.

For the slopes, increase on both sides, starting from the ribbing, 8 x 1 st in every 10th row (7 x 1 st alternating in every 10th and 12th row), including the increased stitches in the ribbing = 68 (74) sts. After 44 cm = 86 rows from the ribbing, bind off 1 x 6 (7) sts for the sleeve cap on both sides, then in every 2nd row 4 x 1 st, in every 4th row 4 x 1 st, and in every 2nd row 3 x 1, 21 x 2 (3) and 1 x 3 (4) sts. After 62.5 cm = 122 rows from the ribbing, bind off the remaining 24 sts.

Assembly: sew the shoulder seams. For the neckline, cast on 124 (132) sts on circular needles for the collar and knit in ribbing, starting with the edge and 1 knit, * 2 purl, 2 knit, repeat from *, and ending with 1 knit, edge. On the left side, make two buttonholes in the penultimate row of purl stitches, as described above.

Make the 1st buttonhole after 16 rows, the 2nd after 16 rows. At the height of the collar 24 cm = 52 rows, bind off all stitches as they appear. Fold the collar in half to the wrong side and sew it. Sew the front short sides of the collar together. Set in the sleeves. Sew the side seams and sleeve seams. Sew on the buttons.
