Seagull sweater knitted

One of these options can easily be the sweater with a round yoke of the "seagull" type. This type of jumper is also called "camaro". The yoke of such a sweater can be knitted with both bright contrasting threads and more subdued combinations of yarn. The sleeve of the jumper can also be of any length.

Let’s knit the "seagull" jumper ourselves

Agree that such a model simply attracts attention and favorably highlights its owner in the gray autumn days. This sweater is often knitted from half-wool or wool yarn, but you can use any options to your liking. What is particularly pleasant about this model is the ability to use leftovers of yarn for contrasting v-shaped lines.

Knitting process (diagrams and description)

  • On circular needles, cast on the first row of stitches with a length of 66 cm (180 stitches + 1 stitch according to the calculations based on the knitted sample, rounding the result to the nearest multiple of ten). This number may vary depending on your preferences, starting from the circumference of the head.
  • Knit one right side row and mark with markers the stitches where the increases will occur (see diagram 1).

When determining the length of the yoke for a classic fit, we suggest you use the table:

Size chart

Table with the lengths of raglan lines

If you want to knit a version of the jumper with a lowered armhole line, the length of the raglan lines in such a product will be greater.

Let’s take 32 cm (112 stitches) as an example, after which there should be a total of the following number of stitches on the needles:

(bust circumference (BC) + stitches for ease (E) + 2*(bicep circumference + stitches for E) – 4* (stitches for raglan underarm).

In this example, we consider the following values:

  • BC – 105 cm.
  • E for the body – 20 cm.
  • E for the sleeve – 5 cm.
  • Underarm stitches – 10 stitches.

After performing the necessary calculations, we get 496 stitches.

According to diagram 1, 8 stitches will be added in each row. To calculate the number of rows with increases, subtract the initially cast on number of stitches (180 stitches) from the last number of stitches on the needles (496 stitches) and divide the result by the number of increases in the row (8). We get 40 rows, which we will evenly distribute over the length of the raglan (112 rows): 10*8 stitches in every 2nd row and then 30*8 stitches in every 3rd row.

Contrast color rows in this round yoke raglan model are knitted according to diagram 2.

Diagram 2 – distribution of multi-colored rows

Tip! To make counting the knitted rows easier, you can use special applications for smartphones or PCs. Such programs also allow you to upload descriptions and diagrams needed for work, which is very helpful in the knitting process.

  • So, knit 112 rows, making the necessary number of increases and changing threads for knitting stripes of different colors. Then separate the stitches for the sleeves, add the armhole and close the body. Next, knit the fabric in the main color.
  • At this point, there are 40*8 stitches + 180 stitches = 500 stitches on the needles. Of these, 164 stitches are for the back and front, and 96 stitches (10 stitches for the underarm + 86 stitches for the body) are for the sleeves. Knit from the back to the first green marker 100 stitches (move the marker), knit 34 stitches, 86 stitches for the sleeve are placed on a spare needle + cast on 10 stitches for the underarm. Then knit 164 stitches for the front (leave the marker here), transfer the stitches for the second sleeve to a spare needle + underarm, finish knitting 34 stitches for the back.
  • Knit 7 rows of stockinette stitch. Use the "boomerang" method for knitting short rows while leveling the front and back of the product, since the neckline of the sweater is v-shaped, and the front will be longer than the back. First, knit the back, then the stitches above the underarms + 3 stitches. Turn the product to the wrong side: the first stitch is "boomerang", then knit from the wrong side to the opposite underarm line + 3 stitches. Then the procedure is repeated from the front side, now knit the row to the first "boomerang", which is knitted through the two walls. Knit another 3 stitches. After that, the procedure is repeated until all stitches are picked up.
  • After leveling like that, knit the necessary length of the product. Also knit the sleeves to the required length, making decreases evenly in the sleeves according to the calculations (96 stitches – stitches for wrist circumference).
  • The bottom of the product and sleeves can be knitted with ribbing. This method can also be used to finish the neckline.

Thus, showing a little patience and diligence, you will be able to enrich your wardrobe with an extraordinary and stylish piece.

Thanks to the wonderful video by Olga Kondratyeva, I knitted the "Seagull" jumper. It is very interesting to knit, from top to bottom, without seams. The neckline is made by increases. If it weren’t for the changing yarn on the stripes (which I don’t like), it would be a pleasure to knit, very relaxing.

Yarn: Italian stock 50% wool, 50% acrylic, 100g/1400m in 4 threads and 50 grams Lambada fine seam 55% cotton, 50% viscose, 50g/170m. Needles 3.25. The weight of the product is 360g.

I cast on 118 stitches. 6 rows of stockinette stitch without increases, then increases: 1/3 in every 2nd row, 1/3 in every 3rd row, 1/3 in every 2nd row. For the underarm - 10 stitches.
The back neck - 10 rows, I knitted with short rows in the stripes of the yoke.
To prevent the neckline from stretching, I reinforced it with a slip stitch crochet seam.

The result is pleasing. I recommend everyone to knit such a model.
