Knitting instructions
Using 4 mm needles. (If the swatch is knitted with a needle size different from 5 mm, for knitting the pattern “1x1 Rib” you should take needles 1-1.5 sizes smaller than the swatch.) Cast on 160 (190) stitches, join in the round.
Knit in the pattern “1x1 Rib” for 9 rows, and in the last row switch to 5 mm needles (or to the needle size that matches your gauge).
Row 1
For size 42-46:
M (start of knitting), 3 purl, M, Japanese pattern (36 stitches), M, 2 purl, M, Japanese pattern (36 stitches), M, 3 purl, 80 knit
For size 48-50:
M (start of knitting), 1 purl, M, Japanese pattern (36 stitches), M, 2 purl, M, Japanese pattern (36 stitches), M, 2 purl, M, Japanese pattern (from 1st to 17th stitches), 1 purl, 95 knit.
Row 2 and the following rows are worked according to the patterns.
Back is knitted in “Stockinette stitch in the round”; the front part consists of “Japanese pattern” and purl stitches.
For an overall sweater length of 55 cm, knit 37 cm (3 full repeats plus the 4th repeat up to row 15).
If you want to knit a different garment length, choose the number of repeats in height at your discretion.
Shaping armholes.
After reaching the desired length to the armholes, divide the knitting into two equal parts.
Slip 80 (95) stitches from the back onto an additional needle or thread; continue knitting the front part in pattern.
For size 42-46 with total garment length 55 cm, continue knitting from row 15 to row 24, then knit one more repeat.
For size 48-50 with total garment length 55 cm, continue knitting from row 15 to row 24, then knit one more repeat plus rows 1 through 12.
During knitting, note how many rows you have knitted in total (per the description, for a garment length of 55 cm you should knit 34 (46) rows respectively).
After the front part of the garment has been knitted,
for size 42-46: bind off 22 stitches on the left shoulder, then leave 36 stitches on the needles (or transfer stitches to an extra needle) and bind off 22 stitches on the right shoulder.
for size 48-50: bind off 28 stitches on the left shoulder, then leave 39 stitches on the needles (or transfer stitches to an extra needle) and bind off 28 stitches on the right shoulder.
Knit the back in the same way (knit the same number of rows as you knit for the front part of the garment).
After that, sew the shoulders with a mattress stitch.
Collar knitting
For size 42-46 (as in the photo):
Transfer the stitches from the extra needle or thread to circular needles 5 mm, and on both sides of the Japanese pattern pick up an additional 2 stitches, i.e.:
M (start of knitting), 2 purl, Japanese pattern (36 stitches), 2 purl, 36 knit.
On the needles there are 76 stitches in total.
Knit in the round following the pattern to the required height (finish knitting the pattern in the 24th row or in the 12th row).
According to the description, you need to knit 1 repeat, and bind off the stitches in a way convenient for you.
For size 48-50:
Transfer the stitches from the extra needle or thread to circular needles 5 mm, picking up an additional 1 stitch on each side of the Japanese pattern, i.e.:
M (start of knitting), 1 purl, Japanese pattern (37 stitches, see the diagram below), 1 purl, 41 knit.
There are 80 stitches on the needles in total.
Knit in the round following the pattern to the required height (finish knitting the pattern in the 24th row or in the 12th row).
As described, you need to knit 1 repeat and bind off the stitches in a way convenient for you.
If you knitted the garment length to your liking and finished on the 12th row, continue the collar knitting from the 13th row. That is, you need to knit from the 13th to the 24th row + from the 1st to the 12th row.
