Knitting Socks Tribute, The Knitter 72.
Size: for a woman's foot with a medium instep circumference, 20.5 cm around. The length can be adjusted while knitting the sock.
The knitting pattern for these socks is also published in “Lace One-Skein Wonders”.
To knit the socks you will need:
- Lisa Souza Superfine Superwash Sport yarn (100% superwash merino wool; 343 m/113 g) in Gingerpeach — 1 skein of 113 g
- 1 circular needle 2.25 mm, 80 cm long, or 2 short circular needles
Gauge
36 sts and 44 rounds = 10 cm, stockinette, with 2.25 mm needles
Notes on knitting the socks:
This pattern is easier to knit with circular needles than with double-pointed needles. On circular needles there will be less shifting of stitches between needles while working the lace pattern. While knitting the leg, pay attention to the note about slipped stitches at the start of certain rounds of the chart. If necessary, redistribute stitches to ease the work.
Prolongation: (slip 1 st as if to knit) 2 times, return these 2 sts to the left needle and knit 2 together through the back loops.
Socks knitting instructions
CUFF
Cast on 68 sts loosely, leaving a yarn tail 30 cm long to later sew the cuff facing.
Place a marker (M) and join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
Knit in stockinette for 2.5 cm.
Round with a picot edge: *2 sts knit together, yarn over; repeat from * to end of round.
Knit in stockinette for 2.5 cm.
LACE
Work rounds 1 - 24 of Frost Patterns using Chart A, repeating the motif twice in every round.
Note: at the start of rounds 15, 16, 19, 20, 23 and 24, remove the marker, slip the first stitch of the round as purl with the yarn behind the work, then place the marker on the right needle. This shifts the start of the round one stitch to the left to compensate for the two decreases at the end of the chart and keeps the pattern aligned.
Work again rounds 1 - 24 of Frost Patterns using Chart A (a total of 48 rounds of the chart).
The section will measure about 14 cm from the round with the picot edge.
HEEL TURN
Turn the work so the wrong side faces you, and slip the last 2 stitches worked of round 24 of Chart A from the left needle to the right. The heel turn is worked in rows, turning the work for the next 34 stitches, starting with the 3rd stitch from the end of the initial round. The 34 stitches picked up for the heel turn that will not be worked may remain on the needle while the heel is being worked.
Row 1 (WS): 3 knit, 31 purl.
Row 2 (RS): 3 purl, *1 knit, slip 1 stitch as purl with yarn in back; repeat from * to the last 3 stitches, 3 knit.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for another 16 times (total 34 rounds), ending on RS.
HEEL TURN
Row 1 (WS): slip 1, 18 purl, 2 sts together purlwise, 1 purl, turn.
Row 2 (RS): slip 1, 5 knit, wrap and turn, 1 knit, turn.
Row 3: slip 1, 6 purl, 2 sts together purlwise, 1 purl, turn.
Row 4: slip 1, 7 knit, wrap and turn, 1 knit, turn.
Row 5: slip 1, 8 purl, 2 sts together purlwise, 1 purl, turn.
Row 6: slip 1, 9 knit, wrap and turn, 1 knit, turn.
Row 7: slip 1, 10 purl, 2 sts together purlwise, 1 purl, turn.
Row 8: slip 1, 11 knit, wrap and turn, 1 knit, turn.
Row 9: slip 1, 12 purl, 2 sts together purlwise, 1 purl, turn.

Row 11: slip 1, 14 purl, 2 sts together purlwise, 1 purl, turn.
Row 12: slip 1, 15 knit, wrap and turn, 1 knit, turn.
Row 13: slip 1, 16 purl, 2 sts together purlwise, 1 purl, turn.
Row 14: slip 1, 17 knit, wrap and turn, 1 knit.
There are 20 stitches left.
GUSSET
Preparatory round: on the knit side of the heel flap, pick up 18 stitches along the side of the heel flap for the right gusset; marker for the new round start; work Round 1 of Frost Patterns from Chart B along the 34 picked-up stitches, with a marker; pick up 18 stitches along the other side of the heel flap for the left gusset; knit again 20 stitches from the heel flap and 18 stitches of the right gusset, = 90 stitches.
Round now starts with the picked-up stitches.
DECREASE THE GUSSET
Round 1: knit in pattern to the end of the picked-up stitches; 1 knit, wrap; knit to the last 3 stitches of the round, 2 knit together, 1 knit, = decreased by 2 stitches.
Round 2: knitting the sole stitches in stockinette, knit the picked-up stitches in pattern as arranged.
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 another 10 times, = 68 stitches remaining: 34 picked-up stitches and 34 sole stitches.
FOOT
Knit straight, as distributed, on 68 stitches, while completing 60 rounds of Chart B Frost Patterns, finishing in Round 12 of the chart. If necessary, knit all stitches in stockinette until the foot reaches the base of the toes, measuring from the back of the heel, or about 5 cm shorter than the desired length.
TOE SHAPING
Round 1: knit 1, wrap, knit to 3 stitches before the second marker at the end of the pick-up stitches, 2 stitches together knit, 1 knit, move the marker, 1 knit, wrap, knit to the last 3 stitches of the round, 2 stitches together knit, 1 knit, = decreased by 4 stitches.
Round 2: knit the stitches.
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 another 7 times, = 36 stitches left.
Repeat only round 1 another 4 times, = 20 stitches.
Distribute the stitches so that one needle has 10 pick-up stitches and the other 10 sole stitches. Join the stitches together with a mattress stitch.
FINISHING
Turn the sock to the wrong side. Fold the cuff facing along the round with the picot edge and the loose yarn end, and sew it to the wrong side, preserving the elasticity of the knitted fabric.
Hide the yarn ends.
Lightly steam
