The chart indicates both the knit and purl rows. The pattern repeat is 26 stitches wide and 36 rows high.

EMPTY SQUARE  - purl (knit in the knit rows, purl in the purl rows)

knit (in the knit rows - knit, in the purl rows purl)

Two knits together knitwise with a right twist (Insert the needle into the 2nd stitch and the 1st stitch, starting from the second and knit them together.)

Two knits together with a left twist (Slip the first stitch as if to knit, knit the 2nd stitch and pull the slipped stitch over it)

Cross 4 stitches to the left (Slip the 2nd stitches to a cable needle and leave it in front, knit the 2 stitches, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle)

Cross 4 stitches to the right (Slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and leave it behind, knit the 2 stitches, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle)
