The pattern rapport consists of four stitches, so we cast on a number that is a multiple of four + 1 additional stitch for the symmetry of the pattern + two edge stitches.
In the description of our pattern, we do not write the edge stitches, but we definitely knit them — we slip the first stitch of the row, and knit the last one as a purl stitch.
For 3 stitches, we knit as follows:
We insert the right needle into the 3 knit stitches and knit them together as a knit stitch through the back loop. We do not slip the stitches on the left needle. We yarn over on the right needle, knit one more knit stitch, and only after knitting the three stitches do we slip the resulting stitches from the left needle.
- Row 1: knit every stitch as purl;
- Row 2: 1 knit stitch * from three stitches, we knit 3, 1 knit*;
- Row 3: knit every stitch as purl;
- Row 4: 3 knit stitches * from three stitches, we knit 3, 1 knit* 2 knit stitches.
Then we continue to knit the pattern, repeating from the first row of knitting.
