Row 2: selvedge stitch, 3 knit stitches, *1 purl stitch, 3 knit stitches*, selvedge stitch.

Row 3: selvedge stitch, *3 purl stitches, knit 3 stitches from 1 knit stitch*, 3 purl stitches, selvedge stitch.

Row 4: selvedge stitch, 3 knit stitches, *3 purl stitches, 3 knit stitches*, selvedge stitch.

Row 5: selvedge stitch, 1 purl stitch, *1 purl stitch, knit 2 stitches together as 1 knit stitch with a right-leaning, 1 knit stitch, knit 2 stitches together as 1 knit stitch with a left-leaning*, 2 purl stitches, selvedge stitch.
