Haruni - a triangular shawl with a slightly crescent shape. It starts with a smaller version of the traditional lace pattern "fern", transitioning into a lush leafy border and finishing with a crocheted bind-off. The name Haruni translates from Quenya (the Elvish language in Tolkien's works) as "grandmother".
You will need:
•440 m of sock (author's choice) or fine yarn
•circular needles. The author used 3.5 mm needles, but she knits quite loosely. You may prefer 3.75 mm or even 4 mm. Keep in mind that the thicker the needles, the more yarn you will need.
•marker
•crochet hook for bind-off
Knitting gauge
21 sts x 18 rows = 10 x 10 cm in lace pattern after blocking. Gauge is not crucial for shawls.
Size of the author's shawl: height 58 cm, wingspan 114 cm. You can easily adjust the shawl to your desired size by knitting more or fewer repeats of the "fern" pattern.
Work description
Cast on with a ribbon. Cast on 3 stitches using any invisible cast-on method.
DESCRIPTION of the beginning of the work.
•1 slip, yarn in front, 2 knit. Slip the first stitch very loosely; this will allow you to stretch the shawl properly later. If desired, the first stitch can be knitted instead of slipped. Repeat this row 5 more times.
•Next row: turn the work, pick up 3 stitches along the side edge of the ribbon and 3 sts from the invisible cast-on. In total, there are 9 sts on the needles. The first and last 3 sts of each row form the edge in garter stitch.
•Place a marker in the central stitch of the row.
Chart A. Start knitting according to Chart A. The chart shows only half of the shawl.
The chart does NOT show 7 stitches: the first 3 and last 3 edge stitches and the central stitch.
Knit the entire row as follows: 1 slip. 2 knit (= three edge stitches), then knit according to the chart from right to left, tag 1 knit = central stitch, then repeat the chart from right to left, end with 3 knit (= edge stitches).
All even rows = 1 slip. 2 knit. purl until the last 3 stitches, 3 knit.
Continue knitting according to Chart A until you have 12 "stems" on each side of the central stitch, that is, 11.5 leaves (which means repeating rows 17-32 a total of 4 more times, the repeat is highlighted in yellow on the chart). A "stem" is a single knit stitch with yarnovers on both sides of it. If you want to increase or enlarge the shawl, you need to finish Chart A with an even number of "stems" on each half.
If your yarn supply is limited, keep in mind that due to the rapid increases in Chart B, it will take about half of all the yarn.
Chart B. In Chart B, you will be increasing stitches much faster in the first half of the chart (the first 15 rows), then in the second half of the chart, you will decrease the number of stitches in the row. Like Chart A, only half of the shawl is shown. Unlike Chart A, Chart B shows the edge stitches.
In the first 15 rows of the chart, you will be "growing" pairs of leaves, while decreasing stitches between the pairs. Each half of the shawl should start and end with a pair of leaves (highlighted in yellow on the chart). So, to knit a complete row of Chart B, you start knitting according to the chart from right to left, repeating the entire chart (except for the edges), ending with the last repeat of the first half, the last yellow stitch. Then the central stitch (not shown on the chart). Repeat for the second half of the shawl, starting and ending with the yellow segment. Finish with three edge stitches.
In rows 17-27, you will be decreasing stitches to form leaves, adding stitches only between leaves (shown in pink), but not between groups of leaves. When you reach the 4 leaves (2 pairs) that form the center of the shawl, knit the increase section (shown in pink) between all the leaves.
Starting with row 17, there is no longer a central stitch; instead, there's a central section (shown in pink). Additionally, the edge stitches should be knitted as follows: yarn over, 2 together knit, 2 knit (instead of 3 knit). Pay attention to the special stitches in row 17.
Bind-off.
After the last row (the wrong side of the item), you can bind off the stitches. Two options are offered (hook or cord), the second option uses more yarn. For fine yarn, either the second option or the first in two strands is recommended.
Option 1. With a hook, knit 4 stitches together. A chain of 6 chain stitches, knit the next 3 stitches on the left needle together knit. Bind off 1 stitch by passing the first stitch (on the hook) over the just knitted stitch. A chain of 5 chain stitches, 3 together knit, bind off 1 stitch. Continue in a similar manner, always knitting 3 together knit. The initial 4 together knit were only for the edge. 3 together knit should fit the pattern, closing the top of each leaf.
If you decided to use another method of bind-off, it may be helpful to first knit one more row according to the pattern to finish the decreases for the tops of the leaves. Regardless of the chosen method of bind-off, bind off the stitches very loosely.
Option 2. 2 together knit, 2 together knit. Return the just knitted stitches to the left needle (without twisting or turning). Knit these 2 stitches together. Again return 2 stitches to the left needle and knit them together. In total, knit these 2 stitches 8 times, resulting in a thin cord. While holding these 2 stitches on the right needle, knit 3 together knit, then bind off one stitch by passing the middle stitch over the just knitted one and dropping it off the needle. Return the remaining 2 stitches to the left needle, 2 knit. Repeat along the entire edge of the shawl. Make sure that the 3 together knit close the tops of the leaves.
Blocking. Weave in the ends, wet the shawl, and stretch it to give it a triangular or slightly crescent shape.

THE PATTERN REPEATS FROM ROWS 17 TO 23.
Chart B
Starts from the beginning of the row, with three edge stitches (of the ribbon and then according to the chart)
Start knitting according to Chart B, I was intimidated by the gray squares, but then I realized that I shouldn't pay attention to them at all!!
According to the chart...
Row 1... (look at the chart) where there is a checkmark, we slip this (edge), then 2 knit, *yarn over, knit, yarn over, 2 together bind-off (slip the first, knit the second and pull it through the first), 2 knit, yarn over, 2 together bind-off (slip the first, knit the second and pull it through the first), yarn over, 2 knit, 1 stitch knit and pull it through the two slipped (make one from three stitches), 2 knit, yarn over, 2 together knit, yarn over, 2 knit, 2 together knit.*
Then repeat the pattern from * to *
Row 2 purl..........
Row 3...
1 slip, 2 knit, *yarn over, knit, yarn over, knit, yarn over, knit, yarn over, 2 together bind-off (slip the first, knit the second and pull it through the first), 2 knit, yarn over, 2 together bind-off (slip the first, knit the second and pull it through the first), yarn over, knit, make one from three stitches, knit, yarn over, two together knit, yarn over, 2 knit, 2 together knit*
Continue repeating from * to *
I knitted the first row according to Chart B. I concluded - where in Chart A the leaf ended (where there are 3 stitches together or bind-off), in Chart B we also knit 3 stitches together above this place, and over the next leaf we form a "stem".
Where in Chart A the "stem" ends, we continue the "path" of yarn overs, but the paths will come towards each other. They are "brought together" by the bind-off from three stitches.
The central stitch remains knit, and on both sides are yarn overs.
After the central stitch, continue knitting according to the same chart as before.
Before the central stitch, it turned out to be - yarn over, knit, yarn over. Similarly, at the end of the row before the three knit stitches will be (yarn over, knit, yarn over)
After the central stitch goes -
*yarn over, knit, yarn over, 2 together bind-off (slip the first, knit the second and pull it through the first), 2 knit, yarn over, 2 together bind-off (slip the first, knit the second and pull it through the first), yarn over, 2 knit, 1 stitch knit and pull it through the two slipped (make one from three stitches), 2 knit, yarn over, 2 together knit, yarn over, 2 knit, 2 together knit.* yarn over, knit, yarn over, 3 knit.
Where we knit - yarn over, knit, yarn over - in these places we will later have pairs of leaves.
In the third row, where there was a yarn over, knit, yarn over, we are already knitting yarn over, knit, yarn over, knit, yarn over, knit, yarn over, that is, we make four yarn overs and one knit between them.
This same "combination" occurs before the central stitch and after the central stitch.
In the fifth row, the number of yarn overs increases to 8, with one knit between them. Where the central stitch is - 16 yarn overs (8 yarn overs before the central and 8 yarn overs after the central stitch)
Row 17 - edge stitch, 1 knit, 2 together bind-off, yarn over, 2 together knit bind-off, 11 knit, 2 together knit, yarn over, 3 knit, yarn over, 2 together bind-off, 11 knit, 2 slip, 1 knit bind-off, *yarn over, 2 slip, 1 knit bind-off, yarn over, 2 slip, 1 knit bind-off, 11 knit, 2 together knit, yarn over, 3 knit, yarn over, 2 together bind-off, 11 knit, 2 slip, 1 knit bind-off, *... before the central stitch instead of 2 slip, 1 knit bind-off, I knitted 2 together, yarn over, knit, yarn over, central stitch, yarn over, 1 knit, yarn over and then repeat from * to * until the end of the row, only at the very end instead of 2 slip, 1 knit bind-off, knit 2 together, yarn over, 2 together, 2 knit.
To make it easier - inside the leaves, there are 11 knit (not counting that on the sides of the leaf we take 2 together to narrow the leaf), and for what is between them, refer to the chart.
