A practical and comfortable jacket for a girl is knitted with cable patterns and is complemented by a hood.

A practical and comfortable children's jacket
Sizes:
For ages 12-18 months (2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, 6 years)
Chest circumference 48 (53, 56, 58.5, 61, 63.5) cm,
Finished garment chest circumference – 58.5 (60.5, 61.5, 64, 66, 68) cm,
Length – 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40) cm,
Sleeve length – 21 (24, 26, 28, 30, 32) cm.
Required materials:
Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted yarn (100% wool; 200 m / 100 grams per skein) – 3 (3, 4, 4, 4, 4) skeins, 5 buttons.
Required tools:
Needles No. 4 and No. 4.5, a cable needle, stitch holders.
Knitting gauge:
23.5 stitches and 27 rows = 10 cm of the upper cable knitted with needles No. 4.5.
PATTERN
Note:
The back and front pieces are knitted as one piece from the bottom to the start of the armhole.
Techniques used:
2 stitches crossed to the right: slip 1 stitch onto a cable needle behind the work, 1 knit stitch, 1 knit stitch from the cable needle;
2 stitches crossed to the left: slip 1 stitch onto a cable needle in front of the work, 1 knit stitch, 1 knit stitch from the cable needle;
4 stitches crossed to the right: slip 3 stitches onto a cable needle behind the work, 1 knit stitch, 3 knit stitches from the cable needle;
4 stitches crossed to the left: slip 1 stitch onto a cable needle in front of the work, 3 knit stitches, 1 knit stitch from the cable needle;
Starting the knitting:
Using needles No. 4, cast on 132 (136, 140, 144, 148, 152) stitches.
1st row (right side): 1 purl stitch, 2 knit stitches, *2 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches; repeat from * to the last stitch, 1 purl stitch.
2nd row: 1 knit stitch, *2 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches; repeat from * to the last 3 stitches, 2 purl stitches, 1 knit stitch.
These two rows form the ribbing pattern.
Knit 3 (3, 4, 4, 4, 4) cm of ribbing, ending with a right side row.
Next row: knit ribbing, while decreasing 1 (1, 2, 0, 0, 0) stitch and increasing 0 (0, 0, 0, 0, 1) stitches – on the needles 131 (135, 138, 144, 148, 153) stitches.
Change to needles No. 4.5.
Establishing row (right side): 4 (6, 1, 4, 6, 2) knit stitches, *1 purl stitch, 2 stitches crossed to the right, 2 stitches crossed to the left, 1 purl stitch, 4 stitches crossed to the right, slip the next stitch onto a cable needle in front of the work, knit the next stitch through the front and back loop, 1 knit stitch, 1 knit stitch from the cable needle; repeat from * to the last 10 (12, 7, 10, 12, 8) stitches, 1 purl stitch, 2 stitches crossed to the right, 2 stitches crossed to the left, 1 purl stitch, 4 (6, 1, 4, 6, 2) knit stitches – on the needles 140 (144, 148, 154, 158, 164) stitches.
1st and all odd rows (wrong side): purl stitches.
2nd row: 4 (6, 1, 4, 6, 2) knit stitches, *1 purl stitch, 2 stitches crossed to the left, 2 stitches crossed to the right, 1 purl stitch, 8 knit stitches; repeat from * to the last 10 (12, 7, 10, 12, 8) stitches, 1 purl stitch, 2 stitches crossed to the left, 2 stitches crossed to the right, 1 purl stitch, 4 (6, 1, 4, 6, 2) knit stitches.

6th row: as 2nd row.
8th row: 4 (6, 1, 4, 6, 2) knit stitches, *1 purl stitch, 2 stitches crossed to the right, 2 stitches crossed to the left, 1 purl stitch, 4 stitches crossed to the right, 4 stitches crossed to the left; repeat from * to the last 10 (12, 7, 10, 12, 8) stitches, 1 purl stitch, 2 stitches crossed to the right, 2 stitches crossed to the left, 1 purl stitch, 4 (6, 1, 4, 6, 2) knit stitches.
These 8 rows form the repeat of the lower cable pattern.
Repeat these 8 rows another 1 (1, 1, 2, 2, 2) times, then knit rows 1-4 once, ending with a right side row.
Decrease row (wrong side): 4 (6, 1, 4, 6, 2) purl stitches, *9 purl stitches, 2 stitches knit together through the back loop, 3 purl stitches; repeat from * to the last 10 (12, 7, 10, 12, 8) stitches, purl stitches to the end of the row – on the needles 131 (135, 138, 144, 148, 153) stitches.
Continue as follows:
1st row: 4 (6, 1, 4, 6, 2) knit stitches, 1 purl stitch, 2 stitches crossed to the left, 2 stitches crossed to the right, 1 purl stitch, 7 knit stitches; repeat from * to the last 10 (12, 7, 10, 12, 8) stitches, 1 purl stitch, 2 stitches crossed to the left, 2 stitches crossed to the right, 1 purl stitch, 4 (6, 1, 4, 6, 2) knit stitches.
2nd row: purl stitches.
3rd row: 4 (6, 1, 4, 6, 2) knit stitches, 1 purl stitch, 2 stitches crossed to the right, 2 stitches crossed to the left, 1 purl stitch, 7 knit stitches; repeat from * to the last 10 (12, 7, 10, 12, 8) stitches, 1 purl stitch, 2 stitches crossed to the right, 2 stitches crossed to the left, 1 purl stitch, 4 (6, 1, 4, 6, 2) knit stitches.
4th row: purl stitches.
These 4 rows form the repeat of the upper cable pattern.
Continue knitting in the established pattern until the knitting height reaches 16 (18, 19, 21, 22, 24) cm, end with a purl row and adding 0 (0, 1, 1, 1, 0) stitches in the last row – on the needles 131 (135, 139, 145, 149, 153) stitches.
Armhole shaping:
Next row: knit 29 (30, 31, 33, 34, 35) stitches, turn the work, place the remaining stitches onto a stitch holder. Continue to knit only on these stitches for the right front piece.
Knit 1 row.
Decrease 1 stitch from the armhole side in the next 3 rows, then 2 times in right side rows – on the needles 24 (25, 26, 28, 29, 30) stitches.
Continue knitting straight until the height of the armhole reaches 9 (9, 10, 9, 10, 10) cm, end with a purl row.
Neckline:
Next row: bind off 6 (6, 6, 7, 7, 8) stitches, knit to the end of the row – on the needles 18 (19, 20, 21, 22, 22) stitches.
Knit 1 row.
Decrease 1 stitch from the neckline side in the next 5 (5, 6, 6, 7, 7) rows – on the needles 13 (14, 14, 15, 15, 15) stitches.
Continue knitting straight until the height of the armhole reaches 13 (13, 14, 14, 15, 15) cm, end with a right side row.
Shoulder slope:
Next row: bind off 6 (7, 7, 7, 7, 7) stitches, knit in established pattern to the end of the row.
Knit straight 1 row.
Bind off the remaining 7 (7, 7, 8, 8, 8) stitches.
On the right side, join the working yarn to the remaining stitches, bind off 6 stitches (1 stitch remains on the needles), knit 60 (62, 64, 66, 68, 70) stitches, turn the work and continue knitting the back on the 61 (63, 65, 67, 69, 71) stitch.
Knit 1 row.
Decrease 1 stitch from each edge in the next 3 rows, then 2 times in right side rows – on the needles 51 (53, 55, 57, 59, 61) stitches.
Continue knitting straight until the height of the armhole reaches the height of the right front piece to the start of the shoulder slope, end with a purl row.
Shoulder slope:
Bind off 6 (7, 7, 7, 7, 7) stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows – on the needles 39 (39, 41, 43, 45, 47) stitches.
Bind off 7 (7, 7, 8, 8, 8) stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows – on the needles 25 (25, 27, 27, 29, 31) stitches.
Place the remaining stitches onto a stitch holder.
On the right side, join the yarn to the remaining stitches, bind off 6 stitches, knit to the end of the row – on the needles 29 (30, 31, 33, 34, 35) stitches.
Knit 1 row.
Decrease 1 stitch from the armhole side in the next 3 rows, then 2 times in right side rows – on the needles 24 (25, 26, 28, 29, 30) stitches.
Continue knitting straight until the height of the armhole reaches 9 (9, 10, 9, 10, 10) cm, end with a right side row.
Neckline:
Next row: bind off 6 (6, 6, 7, 7, 8) stitches, knit to the end of the row.
Decrease 1 stitch from the neckline side in the next 5 (5, 6, 6, 7, 7) rows – on the needles 13 (14, 14, 15, 15, 15) stitches.
Continue knitting straight until the height of the knitting reaches 13 (13, 14, 14, 15, 15) cm, end with a purl row.
Shoulder slope:
Next row: bind off 6 (7, 7, 7, 7, 7) stitches, knit to the end of the row.
Knit 1 row.
Bind off the remaining 7 (7, 7, 8, 8, 8) stitches.
Sleeves:
Using needles No. 4, cast on 30 (34, 34, 34, 34, 38) stitches.
1st row (right side): 2 knit stitches, *2 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches; repeat from * to the end of the row.
2nd row: *2 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches; repeat from * to the last 2 stitches, 2 purl stitches.
These two rows establish the ribbing pattern.
Knit 3 (3, 3, 5, 5, 5) more rows of ribbing, ending with a right side row.
Next row: knit ribbing to the end of the row, decreasing 0 (1, 1, 0, 0, 1) stitches and increasing 1 (0, 0, 1, 1, 0) stitch at the end of the row – on the needles 31 (33, 33, 35, 35, 37) stitches.
Change to needles No. 4.5.
1st row: 6 (7, 7, 8, 8, 9) knit stitches, 1 purl stitch, 2 stitches crossed to the left, 2 stitches crossed to the right, 1 purl stitch, 7 knit stitches, 1 purl stitch, 2 stitches crossed to the left, 2 stitches crossed to the right, 1 purl stitch, 6 (7, 7, 8, 8, 9) knit stitches.
2nd row: purl stitches.
These 2 rows establish the placement of the upper cable pattern.
Continue knitting, repeating the 4 rows of upper cables as for the back and front pieces. Increase 1 stitch at each edge in the next row and then every 4th row 8 (4, 6, 7, 5, 5) times, then every 6th row 1 (5, 4, 4, 7, 7) time – on the needles 51 (53, 55, 59, 61, 63) stitches.
Continue knitting straight until the height of the knitting reaches 21 (24, 26, 28, 30, 32) cm, end with a purl row.
Sleeve cap:
Bind off 3 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows – on the needles 45 (47, 49, 53, 55, 57) stitches.
Bind off 6 (6, 6, 7, 7, 7) stitches at the beginning of the next 6 rows – on the needles 9 (11, 13, 11, 13, 15) stitches.
Bind off the remaining stitches.
Hood:
Using needles No. 4.5, cast on 24 (25, 24, 25, 25, 25) stitches, knit 25 (25, 27, 27, 29, 31) stitches for the back neckline, turn the work and cast on 24 (25, 24, 25, 25, 25) stitches – on the needles 73 (75, 75, 77, 79, 81) stitches.
Starting with a wrong side row, knit 18 (18, 19, 19, 20, 20) cm in stockinette stitch, end with a wrong side row.
Top of the hood:
Next row: bind off 24 (25, 25, 25, 26, 27) stitches (1 stitch remains on the needles), knit 24 (24, 24, 26, 26, 26) knit stitches, bind off the remaining 24 (25, 25, 25, 26, 27) stitches.
On the wrong side, join the working yarn to the remaining stitches and knit 12.5 (12.5, 12.5, 13.5, 13.5, 13.5) cm, end with a wrong side row.
Bind off all stitches.
Join the bind-off edges of the end parts to the side edges of the central part.
Hood edging:
Using needles No. 4 and on the right side, cast on 104 (104, 108, 108, 116, 116) stitches along the entire edge of the hood.
1st row (wrong side): 1 knit stitch, *2 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches; repeat from * to the last 3 stitches, 2 purl stitches, 1 knit stitch.
2nd row: 1 purl stitch, 2 knit stitches, *2 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches; repeat from * to the last stitch, 1 purl stitch.
These two rows establish the ribbing pattern.
Knit 5 more rows of ribbing.
Bind off all stitches.
Edging for the front with buttonholes:
Using needles No. 4 and on the right side, cast on 60 (64, 68, 72, 76, 80) stitches down the left front piece.
1st row (wrong side): 1 knit stitch, *2 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches; repeat from * to the last 3 stitches, 2 purl stitches, 1 knit stitch.
2nd row: 3 knit stitches, *2 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches; repeat from * to the last stitch, 1 knit stitch.
These two rows establish the ribbing pattern.
Next row: knit 3 ribbing stitches, [bind off 2 stitches, knit ribbing until there are 11 (12, 13, 14, 15, 16) stitches on the right needle] – 4 times, bind off 2 stitches, 2 ribbing stitches.
Next row: knit ribbing to the end of the row, casting on stitches over the bound-off stitches from the previous row.
Knit 3 more rows of ribbing.
Bind off all stitches.
Edging for the front:
Using needles No. 4 and on the right side, cast on 60 (64, 68, 72, 76, 80) stitches across the top of the right front piece.
Knit 7 rows of ribbing, as for the left front piece, but without buttonholes.
Bind off all stitches.
Sew the side seams and the sleeve seams. Attach the hood around the neckline of the front pieces to halfway of the edging.
Sew on the buttons. Block the jacket for the girl.
