Knit dress with ruffles and a button placket

Elegant knitted dress with ruffles and a button closure. A detailed step-by-step description will help you knit the garment neatly and symmetrically.

🧶 Left Front

Cast on stitches:
Cast on 15 stitches.

Rows 1–3: all stitches knit.

4th row (wrong side):
5 knit, place marker, 5 purl, place marker, 5 knit.

5th row (right side): all stitches knit.

Repeat rows 4–5 12 times.

30th row (purl): 5 knit, marker, 5 purl, marker, 5 knit.
31st row (knit): 5 knit, marker, 2 knit, yarn over, 1 knit, yarn over, 2 knit, marker, 5 knit = 17 stitches.
32nd row: 5 knit, marker, 7 purl, marker, 5 knit.
33rd row: 5 knit, marker, 2 knit, yarn over, 3 knit, yarn over, 2 knit, marker, 5 knit = 19 stitches.
34th row: 5 knit, marker, 9 purl, marker, 5 knit.
35th row: 5 knit, marker, 2 knit, yarn over, 5 knit, yarn over, 2 knit, marker, 5 knit = 21 stitches.
36–38 rows: continue similarly, increasing the number of knit stitches between yarn overs (see chart).

39th row: at the beginning of the row, increase 3 stitches for the armhole, then all stitches knit.
40–48 rows: knit according to the description, making yarn overs to increase (up to 34 stitches).

49–50 rows: all stitches as in the pattern.

Further increases:
51st row — 36 stitches,
61st — 44 stitches,
71st — 52 stitches,
81st — 60 stitches,
91st — 68 stitches,
97th — 74 stitches,
98th — 74 stitches, remove markers.

🌸 Ruffles on the Left Front

Row 1: 8 knit, 2 purl, 1 knit, yarn over, 1 knit, 3 purl.
(1 knit, yarn over, 1 knit, 3 purl) repeat until the last 5 stitches, 5 knit.
(in the last repeat before the 5 garter stitches there will be 2 purl instead of 3).

Row 2 and all purl rows: knit following the pattern, yarn overs purled.

Next:
3rd row — 2 knit between yarn overs,
5th — 3 knit,
7th — 4 knit,
9th — 5 knit,
11th — 6 knit.

Bind off stitches.

🌷 Right Front

Repeat rows 1–38 of the left front.

Row 39 (knit): knit stitches, increase by 3 stitches in the second garter section (armhole).
Row 40 (purl): 8 knit, marker, 13 purl, marker, 5 knit = 26 stitches.

5th — (3 purl, 3 knit, yarn over, 1 knit)
7th — (3 purl, 4 knit, yarn over, 1 knit)
9th — (3 purl, 5 knit, yarn over, 1 knit)
10th row — per pattern.
Bind off stitches.

Cast on:

• 15 stitches along the cast-on edge of the first front,

• 13 stitches,

• 15 stitches along the second front.
  Total: 43 stitches.

Rows 1–3: all knit.
Row 4: 5 knit, marker, 33 purl, marker, 5 knit.
Row 5: knit.
Repeat rows 4–5 12 times.

Next, increase similarly as the fronts up to row 38.

Row 39: increase by 11 stitches, turn, knit to end of row, increase another 3 stitches = 65 stitches.
Continue increasing up to row 97 inclusive (to 113 stitches).

Row 98: 8 knit, marker, 89 purl, marker, 16 knit.
Remove the markers.

Next rows — per pattern.

🌼 Ruffles on the Back

Row 1: 1 knit, 2 purl. (1 knit, yarn over, 1 knit, 3 purl.) — repeat until the last 8 stitches, 8 knit.
Row 2 and all purl rows — per pattern.
Row 3: (2 knit, yarn over, 1 knit, 3 purl.)
Row 5: (3 knit, yarn over, 1 knit, 3 purl.)
Row 7: (4 knit, yarn over, 1 knit, 3 purl.)
Row 9: (5 knit, yarn over, 1 knit, 3 purl.)
Row 11: (6 knit, yarn over, 1 knit, 3 purl.)
Bind off stitches.

💡 Note: on the back, the ruffles can be knitted on both garter sections, or not knitted at all — for symmetry with the fronts.

🪡 Dress Assembly

Join the side seams, neatly sew on the buttons opposite the buttonholes.
If desired, you can crochet the edge or steam the ruffles for softness.
