Loosely cast on 42 sts and join to knit in the round. Distribute stitches in groups of 6 - for Magic Loop this will be 18 sts on the top needle and 24 sts on the bottom needle.
Knit 16 rounds in ribbing (1 knit, 1 purl).
Switch to the Stripes pattern - knit rows 1-7. In row 8, knit 6 stitches as per pattern, place marker, M1, place marker, continue as per pattern to the end of the round.
Thumb gusset: next round (row 1 of the pattern): knit 6 sts of the pattern, place marker, M1, 1 knit, M1, place marker, continue as per pattern to the end of the round.
Increase by 2 sts between markers every third round as follows: knit according to pattern to the marker, slip marker, M1, knit to marker, M1, slip marker, continue to the end of the round.
Make increases in the following rows of the pattern: 1, 4, 7, 2, 5, 8, 3 and 6. In all other rounds, knit all stitches between markers knit.
Continue increasing until there are 17 sts between markers. Knit 2 more rounds, finishing with row 8.
Next round: knit 6 sts as per pattern, place 17 sts between markers on a scrap yarn, continue as per pattern.
Knit 2 more repeats of the pattern (16 rounds). Knit in ribbing (1 purl, 1 knit) for 4 rounds. Bind off loosely.
Thumb: place 17 sts from scrap yarn onto needles. Pick up and knit 3 sts behind the thumb with knit, then continue knitting on the 17 sts. Knit a total of 4 rounds, then switch to ribbing (1 knit, 1 purl) - 4 rounds.
