The mittens are knitted using the Magic Loop method.

Sizes of mittens:

  • Palm circumference:

    1. 15–17 cm

    2. 17–19 cm

    3. 19–21 cm

Materials:

  1. Needles 2.5 mm (60–80 cm) for knitting with the Magic Loop method, or double-point needles.
You can use another needle size suitable for the given gauge.

  2. Markers, needle, row counter, extra needle, scrap yarn (for finger loops).

Gauge (blocked, stockinette, needles 2.5 mm):

  • 10 cm = 27 stitches

  • 10 cm = 37 rows

Keep in mind that gauge varies by yarn!
Try different needle sizes to achieve the indicated gauge.
It is recommended to swatch 15×15 cm.
Before starting knitting, it is strongly recommended to knit a swatch.
When buying yarn, consider extra yarn for the swatch.

Used abbreviations:

  • лиц. — knit stitch

  • изн. — purl stitch

  • ТС — back side

  • Л — palm

  • (…)*3 — repeat three times

  • ЛП — increase from a knitwise wrap with a left-leaning slant

  • ПП — increase from a knitwise wrap with a right-leaning slant

  • ПИ — increase from purl

  • УЛП — two stitches together knitwise with a right-leaning slant

  • УЛЛ — two stitches together knitwise with a left-leaning slant

  • УИ — two stitches together purlwise

Yarn (consumption for palm length up to 19 cm):

  1. Merino Wool MERINO WOOL — 50 g / 128 m, 100% merino. Knitting in 1 strand.

    • 15–17 cm — 60 g

    • 17–19 cm — 65 g

    • 19–21 cm — 70 g

  2. Chinese Cashmere — 100% cashmere, 50 g / 350 m. Knitting in 2 strands.

    • 15–17 cm — 45 g

    • 17–19 cm — 50 g

    • 19–21 cm — 55 g

  3. AGNES (100 % baby alpaca) — 50 g / 175 m. Knitting in 1 strand.

    • 15–17 cm — 45 g

    • 17–19 cm — 50 g

    • 19–21 cm — 55 g

  4. Kashmir Lotus Yarn — 100% cashmere, 182 m / 55 g. Knitting in 1 strand.

    • 15–17 cm — 50 g

    • 17–19 cm — 55 g

    • 19–21 cm — 60 g

  5. Mink Fur — 90% down, 10% polyamide, 350 m / 50 g. Knitting in 2 strands.

    • 15–17 cm — 50 g

    • 17–19 cm — 55 g

    • 19–21 cm — 60 g

      1. Before starting, take a look at the yarn overview.

      2. Stockinette stitches look more even when you knit the purl stitches in the traditional way.

      3. Mittens from merino wool will be denser than those from cashmere.

      4. Be sure to try the garment on at every stage.

      5. Do not choose mittens too tightly: if hand circumference is 17 cm, knit size 17–19 cm.

      6. If you want a warmer option, you can add mink down, angora, mohair on silk, or alpaca on silk to the merino. In that case, it is better to use merino with a yardage of 160/25.

      7. Care instructions are given in the Blocking section.

      8. Ribbing: pattern 1×1 — 1 knit, 1 purl.

Mittens — size 15–17 cm

Before starting to knit, cast on 41 stitches (1 for joining in the round).
Knit using the Magic Loop method 40 stitches in the 1×1 rib to a height of 5 cm.

Divide the knitting:

  • Back side — 26 stitches,

  • palm — 14 stitches.

Notations:
knit stitch — front stitch,
purl stitch — purl stitch,
TS — back side,
L — palm,
(…)*3 — repeat 3 times,
LP — increase from a knit stitch with a left-leaning slant,
PP — increase from a knit stitch with a right-leaning slant,
PI — increase from purl stitch.

Left mitten

Increases are made from a long stitch in every row, all on the palm, not binding off 3 stitches to the end of the row (purl, knit, purl).

1 row:
TS: (1 knit, 1 purl) × 13 = 26 stitches.
L: (knit, purl) × 5, knit, PI, purl, knit, purl → 15 stitches.

2 row:
TS: (1 knit, 1 purl) × 13 = 26 stitches.
L: (knit, purl) × 6, PP, purl, knit, purl → 16 stitches.

3 row:
TS: (1 knit, 1 purl) × 13 = 26 stitches.
L: (knit, purl) × 6, knit, PI, purl, knit, purl → 17 stitches.

4 row:
TS: (1 knit, 1 purl) × 13 = 26 stitches.
L: (knit, purl) × 7, PP, purl, knit, purl → 18 stitches.

Continue increases until the 26th row inclusive, until there are 40 stitches on the palm.
Total: 66 stitches on the mitten.
Then knit 1 even row with no increases.

  • After the even row, detach the stitches for the finger.

    Finger separation:
    Back side: (1 knit, 1 purl) × 13 = 26 stitches.
Palm: (knit, purl) × 11, knit, 14 stitches placed on a separate thread, purl, knit, purl.
After this, on the palm and back side remain 26 stitches.

Continue knitting until there remains 2–2.5 cm to the end of the palm. Be sure to try on the mitten.

    For palm length:

    • 15 cm — 42 rows

    • 17 cm — 46 rows

    • 19 cm — 50 rows

    Crown shaping (decreases)

Now you need to place markers on the stitches along which the decreases will be made.
A total of 14 stitches — 7 on each side.

Find the outermost knit stitch on the palm (to the left of the finger) — this is the central stitch.
    From it count:
to the left — purl, knit, purl (place a marker),
to the right — purl, knit, purl (place a marker).
You should have 7 stitches (purl, knit, purl, knit, purl, knit, purl), along which the decreases are made.
Next count 19 stitches and also mark 7 stitches.

    Total:
19 stitches on the palm and back side,
7 stitches on each side (where the decreases will be).

    3 stitches together knit,
    1 purl,
    3 stitches together knit,
    3 stitches together knit,

Increases are also made from a long stitch in every row, but at the beginning of the palm, after the first two stitches (knit, purl).

    1 row:

Continue until row 26 inclusive, until the palm has 40 stitches (a total of 66 stitches).

  • Right mitten (continued)

After you have 40 stitches on the palm (a total of 66 stitches),
knit one shaping row without increases.

    Finger separation

    Back side (BS): (1 knit, 1 purl) × 13 = 26 stitches.
Palm: knit, purl, slip 14 stitches onto an extra thread, then (knit, purl) × 12.

Cut the yarn, draw the crown tight, and weave in the end.

    Finger

Transfer 14 stitches onto an extra thread and pick up 4 stitches from the edges (to avoid holes).
Total on the needles 18 stitches.

    • Left mitten — is knitted in the same order as the main one.

    • Right mitten — likewise.

Knit the finger to the desired length:

    • 6 cm — 20 rows

    • 7 cm — 23 rows

    Decreases:
Row 1: knit 2 stitches together with a right-leaning decrease — repeat to the end of the row.
Row 2: repeat the decrease in the same way.
Cut the yarn, draw the crown tight, weave in the end.

  • 🧤 Main mitten

    • Total number of stitches: 66

    • Back side (BS): 26 stitches

    • Palm (P): 14 stitches

    Lower section

    • Starting after the ribbing: 40 stitches in work (26 BS + 14 P).

    • Knit 26 rows with increases (for the finger gusset).

    Finger separation

    • After 26 rows — 14 stitches of the finger are slipped onto an extra thread.

    Next: palm and back side

    • After separating the finger, worked 46 rounds up to the start of the crown.

    • Length of the mitten along the palm — 17 cm.

    Crown

    • Shaping is formed by decreases over 8 rows.

    👍 Thumb

    • Slip 14 stitches onto the extra yarn and pick up 4 stitches at the edges — total 18 stitches.

    • Knit in the round for 23 rounds, finger length — 7 cm.

    Thus, the diagram visually shows:

    • the structure of the mitten (palm, finger, crown);

    • the number of rows and stitches at each stage;

    • the final length of the mitten and finger for the size 15–17 cm.

    • MITTENS — size 17–19 cm

Before starting to knit, cast on 43 stitches (1 for joining in the round).
Knit using the Magic Loop method 42 stitches with the pattern 1×1 rib to a height of 5 cm.

      Divide the knitting:

      • back of the hand — 28 stitches,

      • palm — 14 stitches.

      Legend:
      knit stitch — лиц. ,
      purl stitch — изн.,
TS — back of the hand,
      L — palm,
      (…)*3 — repeat three times,
LP — increase from a knit stitch with a left-leaning slope,
PP — increase from a knit stitch with a right-leaning slope,
      PI — increase from purl.

      Left mitten

Increases are made from a slip stitch in every row. All increases are on the palm, not finishing 3 stitches before the end of the row (purl, knit, purl).

      Row 1:
      Back of the hand: (1 knit, 1 purl) × 14 = 28 stitches.
Palm: (knit, purl) × 5, knit, PI, purl, knit, purl → 15 stitches.

      Row 2:
      Back of the hand: (1 knit, 1 purl) × 14 = 28 stitches.
Palm: (knit, purl) × 6, PP, purl, knit, purl. → 16 stitches.

      Row 3:
      Back of the hand: (1 knit, 1 purl) × 14 = 28 stitches.
Palm: (knit, purl) × 6, knit, PI, purl, knit, purl. → 17 stitches.

      Row 4:
      Back of the hand: (1 knit, 1 purl) × 14 = 28 stitches.
Palm: (knit, purl) × 7, PP, purl, knit, purl. → 18 stitches.

Continue increasing until row 28 inclusive, while there are 42 stitches on the palm (total 70 stitches).
Then knit a flat row without increases.

      Separation for the finger

      Back of the hand: (1 knit, 1 purl) × 14 = 28 stitches.

For the length of the palm:

      • 17 cm — 46 rows

      • 19 cm — 50 rows

      Crown (decreases)

Place markers on the stitches (7 on each side, total 14 stitches).

Find the outermost knit stitch on the palm (to the left of the finger) — this is the central stitch.
From it count three stitches to the left and right (purl, knit, purl) and place markers.
This yields 7 stitches (purl, knit, purl, knit, purl, knit, purl), along which decreases are made.
Next count 21 stitches and also mark 7 stitches.

      Total:
21 stitches on the palm and back of the hand,

Main mitten

  • Total stitches: 70

  • Back: 28 stitches

  • Palm: 14 stitches

Lower section

  • After the ribbing, 42 stitches are in work (28 Back + 14 Palm).

  • Next, increases for the finger wedge are performed — 28 rows.

Finger

  • 14 stitches are separated for the finger.

  • After separating the finger, the mitten is knitted straight for another 46 rows until the crown begins.

  • Length of the mitten: 17 cm.

Crown

👍 Thumb

  • 14 stitches are slipped onto an extra thread and 4 stitches are picked up from the edges → total 18 stitches.

  • Knit in the round for 23 rows.

  • Finger length: 7 cm.

Thus, the diagram shows the proportions and calculations for size 17–19 cm:

  • increase in the number of stitches compared with the smaller size,

  • slightly longer wedge and crown,

  • the same 18 stitches and 23 rows for the finger.

  1.
    • Right mitten

Increases are made in every row, at the beginning of the palm, after the first two stitches (knit, purl).

Continue increases up to row 28 inclusive, until there are 42 stitches on the palm (total 70 stitches).
Then knit 1 row with no increases.

      Separation of the finger

      Back: (1 knit, 1 purl) × 14 = 28 stitches.
Palm: knit, purl, 14 stitches to be slipped onto an extra thread, then (knit, purl) × 13.
After this, there are 28 stitches on the palm and 28 stitches on the back.

Continue knitting until the end of the palm (leave 2–2.5 cm to the fingertips).
      For palm length:

      • 17 cm — 46 rows

      • 19 cm — 50 rows

      Right mitten crown

Place markers 7 stitches from each side (total 14 stitches).

      Thumb (for both mittens)

Slip 14 stitches onto an extra thread and pick up 4 stitches at the edges.
      Total on needles 18 stitches.

Knit in the round to the desired length:

      Divide the knitting:

      • Back — 30 stitches,

      • Palm — 14 stitches.

      Left mitten

Increases are made from a wrap ( протяжки ) in every row, on the palm, leaving 3 stitches to the end (purl, knit, purl).

      Row 1:

After this, 30 stitches on the palm and back.

Continue knitting until 2–2.5 cm remain to the end of the palm, while trying on the mitten.

      For palm length:

      • 19 cm — 50 rows

      • 21 cm — 54 rows

      Crown (decreases)

Place markers on the side stitches — 7 on each side (total 14).
Find the outermost knit stitch on the palm (to the left of the finger) — the center.
From it count to the left and right by three stitches (purl, knit, purl) and place markers.

      Row 1:
      Back: (1 knit, 1 purl) × 15 = 30 stitches.

Continue knitting until there are 2–2.5 cm to the end of the palm.
For the length of the palm:

      • 19 cm — 50 rows

      • 21 cm — 54 rows

      Top of the Right mitten

Marking and decreases are performed similarly to the left mitten, but the central knit stitch is located to the right of the finger.

The sequence of decreases completely matches the description of the left mitten (10 rows alternating UI / ULP, etc.).
After finishing all decreases, 20 stitches remain on the needles — perform final decreases:
      3 stitches together knitwise (×3), 1 purl, 3 stitches together knitwise (×3), 1 purl.
Cut the thread, pull the crown tight, hide the end.

      Thumb (for both mittens)

Transfer 14 stitches to an extra yarn and pick up 4 stitches from the edges to avoid holes.
Total on the needles 18 stitches.

Knit in the round to the desired length:

      • 7 cm — 23 rows

      • 8 cm — 26 rows

      Decreases:
Row 1 — 2 stitches together knitwise (repeat to end of row).
Row 2 — repeat the decrease.
Cut the thread, pull the crown tight, hide the ends

  2. Main mitten

    • Total stitches: 76

    • Back side (BS): 30 stitches

    • Palm (P): 16 stitches

    Lower part

    • After the ribbing — 46 stitches (30 BS + 16 P).

    • Next increases for the thumb gusset are made over 30 rows.

    Thumb

    • 16 stitches are separated for the thumb.

    • After this, the mitten is knitted straight for another 46 rows until the start of the crown.

    • Length of the mitten: 17 cm.

    Crown

    • Formed over 10 rounds of decreases.

    👍 Finger

    • Slipped 16 stitches with the extra yarn and picked up 4 stitches from the edges → total 20 stitches.

    • Knit in the round for 23 rounds.

    • Finger length: 7 cm.

    Thus, the pattern shows:

    • an increase in the total number of stitches and rounds compared with the previous sizes,

    • a larger gusset and a wider finger,

    • the same finger height — 23 rounds (7 cm).

    •

    • VTO (wet-heat treatment)
