Detailed instructions for top-down raglan knitting with calculations

Crossing in row 13

There is a question about one of the symbols on the diagram — let's figure out how to knit it correctly.

Execution description:

  • Leave 2 stitches on the first auxiliary needle behind the work;

  • another 2 stitches — on the second auxiliary needle, also behind the work;

  • knit 2 knit stitches from the main needle;

  • then knit purl stitches from the second auxiliary needle;

  • after that knit knit stitches from the first auxiliary needle.

It's simple, once you figure it out. The symbol is only complicated at first glance.

Stitch calculation for raglan

Initial data:

  • Knitting density: 3 stitches per 1 cm.

  • Neck circumference: 50 cm.

Calculation of total number of stitches:

3 stitches * 50 cm = 150 stitches

Account for raglan lines:

  • Raglan lines — 4.

  • For each — 2 stitches: a total of 8 stitches.

150 stitches – 8 raglan stitches = 142 stitches

Division into parts:

  • Back — 47 stitches

  • Front — 47 stitches

  • Sleeves — 48 stitches (24 stitches each)

Narrowing the sleeves

To prevent the sleeves from being too wide, they are narrowed by 1.5 cm:

3 stitches * 1.5 cm = 4.5 → round to 4 stitches

24 – 4 = 20 stitches for each sleeve

Distribution after narrowing:

  • Back: 47 + 4 = 51 stitches

  • Front: 47 + 4 = 51 stitches

Since the back should be narrower than the front, 4 stitches are redistributed:

  • Back: 51 – 4 = 47 stitches

  • Front: 51 + 4 = 55 stitches

Final distribution:

  • Back — 47 stitches

  • Front — 55 stitches

  • Sleeves — 20 stitches each

  • Raglan lines — 8 stitches

Verification:

47 + 55 + 20 + 20 + 8 = 150 stitches — all correct

Important note on raglan

Before and after each raglan line, you need to make a yarn over to create an increase.

All yarn overs are knitted purl stitches every other row: in one row — yarn overs, in the next — they are knitted.

Beginning the knitting

  1. Cast on stitches for the back — 47 stitches.

  2. Knitting is done back and forth, with gradual increases:

    • First — 2 raglan stitches with yarn overs (on both sides of the raglan line).

    • Then — sleeve stitches, added in decreasing in 4 steps:

      7, 5, 4, 4
    • Next — 2 raglan stitches + yarn overs.

    • After that — front stitches, added in increasing in 7 steps:

      1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 4

      The central 25 stitches remain unchanged.

  3. After forming the neckline, the knitting is joined in the round, including back and front stitches in the main pattern.

The pattern repeat consists of 14 stitches.

Simplification for beginners

  • The sweater can be knitted raglan from the bottom or in separate pieces.

  • When knitting with a yoke — the pattern can be placed only on the front, leaving the back in stockinette stitch.

Calculation of decreases for sleeves

Example:

  1. Vertical density: 3 rows per 1 cm

  2. Sleeve length: 40 cm

40 * 3 = 120 rows
  1. Wrist circumference: 15 cm, density 2 stitches per 1 cm

15 * 2 = 30 stitches should remain at the wrist
  1. Sleeve stitches at the beginning: 80 stitches

80 – 30 = 50 stitches to decrease
  1. Since decreases are on both sides:

50 / 2 = 25 decreases on each side
  1. Number of rows:

120 / 25 = 4.8

In conclusion: decreases are made every 4th row, and a few — every 5th row (for evenness).

Conclusion

All calculations and recommendations are given with consideration for practical application and real examples. If necessary, the pattern can be adapted, and the configuration simplified. Don't be afraid of changes — the main thing is that the result brings joy!

Wishing everyone easy stitches and inspiration in the process!
