SQUARE HEEL WITH SHORT ROWSKlubokhttp://klubok.work/1/53/6403/Klubokhttps://klubok.work/css/image/top-logo-en.png
Knitting a square heel with short rows is not difficult; the amount of work and calculations is no more than when knitting a regular square heel. So. We have finished the cuff, in the last row we redistributed the stitches, that is, the stitches from needles 4 and 1 were moved to one needle.
It’s easier for me to explain with a specific example; today’s example is bright yellow socks made from yarn of unknown composition.
So, we have finished the last row of the cuff, the stitches from needles 1 and 4 were moved to one needle, resulting in 26 stitches on the needle; we begin the heel. I made a non-reinforced version.
We knit the heel as follows:
Right side rows: edge, 1 purl, 22 knit, 1 purl, edge.
Wrong side rows – as per pattern, i.e.: edge, 1 knit, 22 purl, 1 knit, edge.
Knit in this manner until the desired height of the heel is reached. Usually, you knit as many rows as there are stitches on the needles. In our case – we knit 26 rows. The last wrong side row can be knitted entirely in purl stitches. The number of rows should be even, i.e. the last knitted row should be a wrong side row.
We begin short rows, this will be the place where the heel rounds off. The heel lies in front of us with the right side facing up.
Short rows, row 1 right side: slip 1 stitch as knit, knit to the middle of the row (in our case, knit 12 stitches), knit 2 more stitches, knit 2 together as "slip-knit-pull through" / slip the stitch as knit, knit the next stitch, pull through the slipped stitch, 1 knit. Turn the work.
Short rows, row 2 wrong side: the work is in front of us with the wrong side facing up. Slip 1 stitch as purl, knit 5 purl, knit 2 together purl, 1 purl. Turn the work.
Short rows, row 3 right side: Slip 1 stitch as knit, knit 6 stitches knit, knit 2 together as "slip-knit-pull through", 1 knit. Turn the work.
Short rows, row 4 wrong side: Slip 1 stitch as purl, knit 7 purl, knit 2 together purl, 1 purl. Turn the work.
Short rows, row 5 right side: Slip 1 stitch as knit, knit 8 stitches knit, knit 2 together as "slip-knit-pull through", 1 knit. Turn the work.
This way we knit, increasing the number of stitches between the first slipped stitch and the knitted together by 1 stitch in each row. In other words, we knit to the last stitch before the break in the row of stitches on the needle, we knit this last stitch together with the next one, and knit one more stitch behind them. We turn the work. In the last (wrong side) row, we should finish the stitches that need to be knitted after the two together. In the second to last (right side) row, we finish with two knit together "slip-knit-pull through" /! at this point the stitches on the needle should end/, and in the last (wrong side) row we also knit 2 together purl, and these 2 together – the last stitches on the needle.
The heel is ready.
We turn the work, and we have the right side row in front of us. Slip 1 stitch as knit, then knit all the stitches of the heel, pick up along the edge the number of stitches equal to half the number of knitted rows; I like to avoid holes, so I pick up one more stitch from the gap between needles 1 and 2, knit the stitches from needles 2 and 3, pick up along the edge, similar to what we did before, one stitch from the gap between needles 3 and 4, and the same number of stitches as we picked up on the first edge. We knit half of the heel stitches onto needle 4. Done. We can start the instep gusset.
