Since the hat is specifically winter, I wanted to make it as warm as possible, so I chose this braid - dense and frequent, but you can basically take any other.
I cast on stitches for the braid on an additional thread, which I later removed and made a seam on the open stitches of both ends of the braid.
Next, I cast on stitches for the crown. Before the edge stitch of the braid, I had knitted a purl stitch. I used a hook to cast on stitches onto circular needles along this purl path, before the edge stitch (the edge braid remains inside). For the crown, I cast on two from two, skipping one; for the ribbing, I cast on into each stitch (i.e., the number of ribbing stitches = the number of knitted rows of the braid).
I decided that there would be 8 braids of 2*2 on the crown, counted the total number of stitches, subtracted the stitches of the braids, divided by 8, and got the number of stitches between the braids. I made decreases in the purl stitches between the braids, knitting 2 purl stitches together, decreasing in every row until only the stitches of the braids remained, which I pulled together with a thread.
I tried on the hat, determined the width of the ribbing, knitted it, tried it on again, and distributed the stitches for the back of the head, forehead, and ears. The proportions in this hat are as follows: the total number of ribbing stitches is divided into 6 parts, 1 part goes to the back of the head, 2 parts to the forehead, and the remaining 3 are divided equally between the ears.
For the ears, knit a few rows straight, then start decreasing (the length of the ears can be any, mine converge under the chin)
After that, you can make the edging. The edging – 4 rows of hollow ribbing, close the stitches with a needle. I did not close the stitches on the front and back of the hat (when I knitted the ears), but I had to cast on stitches for the ears.
Casting on stitches on the wrong side of the ear: with a hook along the first braid from the edge, into each stitch.
Casting on stitches on the right side of the ear: with a hook along the second braid from the edge (thus, the seam from the cast-on on the wrong side will remain inside), into each stitch. The edging on the ears is done with 1 strand of Moscow yarn.
