The cap is knitted using short rows. (In my case, the German method was used).
.
Cast on 52 stitches. (2 edge stitches, 50 main)
.
Row 1. All stitches are purl.
Row 2. 44 stitches are knit. Turn around!!!
Row 3. 44 purl.
Row 4. 40 knit. Turn around.
Row 5. 40 purl.
Row 6. 36 knit. Turn.
Row 7. 36 purl.
Row 8. 32 knit. Turn.
Row 9. 32 purl.
Row 10. 28 knit. Turn.
Row 11. 28 purl.
Row 12. Knit 52 stitches.
Row 13. 8 purl, 44 knit.
Row 14. 44 purl. Turn.
Row 15. 44 knit.
Row 16. 40 purl. Turn.
Row 17. 40 knit.
Row 18. 36 purl. Turn.
Row 19. 36 knit.
Row 20. 32 purl. Turn.
Row 21. 32 knit.
Row 22. 28 purl.
Row 23. 28 knit.
Row 24. 44 purl, 8 knit.
Row 25. = Row 1.
Row 26. = Row 2.
And so on similarly.
The number of wedges should be even. I have 10. Sew the cap together in any way convenient for you. I used a whip stitch with a hook. Done!
.
Recommendations
1. The yarn should not be too thin, and the needles thick. That is, the knitting should not be too loose.
2. It is better to do wet blocking before sewing.
3. By increasing the number of turns, the size of the cap increases in circumference.
4. By increasing the total initial number of stitches, the length of the crown increases.
I completely agree with the recommendations.
But I want to point out: since the cap is knitted sideways, it stretches.
This must be taken into account, and for a good fit, subtract 2-3 cm from the required volume in the calculations.
(That is, if we need to knit for a volume of 50 cm, subtract 2(3) cm - and we calculate for 48(47) cm)
I also suggest knitting a hollow cord along the edge of the cap right away, so that the cap fits snugly and does not slip off the kids.
The yarn can be any, but not too thin. Needles should not be too thick (as mentioned above).
What I would also note is that if the wedges are not too wide and not too high, the cap looks even more interesting.
To ensure that the cap sits well on the head, Margarita made a good suggestion:
I knitted many "beanies" using the same method. If you allow me a small comment from my personal experience
The lower edge does not need to be finished in any special way, just pay attention to the edge stitches, and to ensure that the cap fits snugly in the lower part (circumference forehead-nape) I made one short row in each wedge, knitting 3-5 cm short of the lower edge.
And the caps fit well on the head, they do not squeeze or slide off!
I will definitely use this advice.
a) We all start by knitting a sample, say on 10(20)p: 5(10)p knit, 5(10)p purl, for a height of 10(20) rows.
Knit tightly, not loosely. Perform wet blocking.
This moment is very important, as the yarn behaves differently, and here it is also knitted sideways.
b) After completing point "a)", we make calculations for our size and height of the cap.
I had already knitted a couple of samples before, the first to understand how this cap is knitted.

1.
The second was knitted according to a scheme that I devised before the description posted by the master.
This scheme can be taken as a basis, increasing or decreasing the step of the short rows and reducing their number, which will make the wedge thinner, I share
1.
in this scheme, odd rows are purl, even rows are knit
the step of short rows, in my case, on the tail - 5 stitches, then regular 3p., to the desired height.
The step can vary from 1 and above stitches.
The cross in the scheme is the body of the cap itself (below I will give a description and you will understand what this is)
в) We start knitting with a waste yarn, so that in the end it will be beautiful to sew stitch by stitch.

1.
Sewing can be done in any other way.
г) We knit short rows using any method that is acceptable to you.
Thanks to the master, I learned that I was knitting using the German method.
But there are different methods, available information:
But I, for example, could not find how to knit short rows for purl smooth, and knitted somehow intuitively.
Perhaps you have a great way to knit short rows for purl smooth - share.
In the unfolded form, the cap looks as follows
1.
d) what I mean by the body of the cap: it's simple - it's its height until the moment of narrowing, for example
/
1.
in my case - this is 11 cm, the total height - 15 cm Attention! 15 cm is the standard height of the cap for my baby.
And the height of the Bulb - 25 cm (this height can be any, I approximately applied a centimeter and decided that it would be like this, namely 25 cm), and the body in the Bulb is 11 cm, just like in the standard cap.
how we find the length of the body of the cap:
1) either take the average indicators by age from the table
1.
2) or calculate it ourselves, it is approximately 1/4 of the total height of a simple standard cap for a child.
That is, if the height is 17 cm, then 17/4= 4.25; 17-4.25 =12.8 cm - this is the body of the cap
we translate cm into stitches and mark this height with a marker when knitting.
Attention! below the marker do not knit short rows, otherwise the cap will slide down.
1.
If the short rows end above, not reaching the marker, it is not critical, but the shape will deform slightly at the top.
I knit slowly, I will try to answer all your questions, do not hesitate to ask them.
Let's go, I am waiting:
1) your samples after wet blocking
2) determine the sizes of the cap: body of the cap, width, and total height.
3) make calculations based on your sample (if this point is not clear, I will write in more detail)
I will knit the cap from Детская Новинка by Пехорка 50g-200m (100% acrylic), needles 2.5
1) The sample turned out to be at 20p=10cm so 1cm=2p; 20 rows=7cm so 1cm=2.8r.
/
1.
2) Body of the cap - 11cm= 11*2=22p.
Width (circumference) 47cm= 47*2.8=132r. (rounding)
Total height 25cm= 25*2=50p.
a) I plan to knit an 8-wedge cap, that is, 132r/8=16 r. for one wedge, rounded
b) Now we count how many stitches are involved in the short rows:
50p (height) - 22p (body of the cap)=28p
From this number of stitches, I subtract the stitches for the tail (my baby is 1.4 years old, I decided to make the tail short = 5p.) 28-5=23p
23p/3p. step=7 turns=21p. 2 extra stitches, I will not take them into account.
Here I hit the desired density of the wedge
But this may not necessarily work for you. So you can adjust the number of turns with the stitches in the step of the short rows, take not 3p, but say 2 or 4. or simply decrease or increase the height of the cap.
(a bit chaotic, but I hope it's clear).
в) I will knit, as planned, with 3 stitches of the hollow cord along the edge of the cap.
Thus, the total number of stitches for the entire height will be:
3p. (hollow cord) + 22p. (body of the cap) + 21p. (involved in the short rows) + 5p (tail)=51p.
I cast on using a waste yarn:
/
1.
and then according to the scheme:
1st row completely purl.
2nd row knit, not finishing 5p. (tail), while simultaneously marking the height of the body of the cap + 3p. hollow cord
1.
this is already a short row
In the 3rd row, I turn the knitting, make a yarn over on the working needle, and continue knitting purl, until the end of the row I do not finish 3 stitches (hollow cord), just transfer them to the working needle
In the 4th row I knit 3p. of the hollow cord (we knit very loosely, as if stretching the stitches) and then knit stitches! according to the scheme, the short rows with a step of 3p. started!
1.
and so on I knit to the height of the body of the cap
1.
the stitches in the short rows look like this in the end:
transition from knit smooth to purl smooth:
1.
transition from purl smooth to knit smooth
1.
I knitted all the wedges. It's time to sew and perform wet blocking.
1.
I sewed it. While sewing, I realized that stitch by stitch is not for me. The kids distract me, as soon as I stop, nonsense starts...
In general, after wet blocking it looks like this:
1.
And here is the result:
1.
Knitted from yarn Пехорка, series детский каприз. 50% merino wool, 50% fiber. Very soft and not prickly, just what is needed for kids
