Sugar Cane

Dense Hat with Melange Effect
by Sharon Matarazzo (CityPurl on Ravelry)

MATERIALS

YARN

  • Yarn A: Approximately 128 m (140 yards) of very fine yarn (the sample is knitted from Filatura Di Crosa Superior in white; Rowan Kidsilk Haze is a suitable substitute)

  • Yarn B: Approximately 128 m (140 yards) of fine yarn (fingering-weight) (the sample is knitted from ColourMart Shiny Cotton in Cane)

NEEDLES

  • Size A (for casting on and edging): 2.75 mm (US 2) — for your preferred method of knitting in the round (either using DPNs or long circular needles with the magic loop method)

  • Size B (for the body of the hat): 3.25 mm (US3) — for your preferred method of knitting in the round (either using DPNs or long circular needles with the magic loop method)

ADDITIONAL

  • 4 removable stitch markers (including one unique for the beginning of the round)

  • blunt-end yarn needle

  • scissors

  • blocking materials (optional)

SIZES

One size: 54–56 cm (21–22 in)
Fits average women's size

FINISHED DIMENSIONS

  • Brim circumference (when stretched): 46 cm / 18 in

  • Height: 24.5 cm / 9 5/8 in
For best results, cast on slightly fewer stitches (10 cm / 4 in less).

GAUGE

22 sts and 34 rows = 10 cm (4 in) in stockinette stitch with double yarn (yarns A + B) using needles size B

DECREASE TYPES

  • SL1TG-K1-PSSO (central double decrease):
Slip the first stitch from the front onto the next 2 stitches on the right needle.
    Slip 2 stitches as follows:
Slip 1 stitch as knit, and slip the 2nd stitch as knit.
Pull the 1st slipped stitch over the 2nd.
This decreases 2 stitches and creates a centered decrease line.

  • Stockinette stitch: Knit in the round, purl in the round.

  • INSTRUCTIONS

    EDGING

Cast on 96 sts using size A needles with yarn A held double.
Do not join in the round.
Adjust size by adding or subtracting stitches, in multiples of 4.

    Next row (WS):
    Purl to the end.

Then knit with yarn A and B (1 strand of each), in the round (using long circular needles with the magic loop method or on 5 DPNs), place a marker for the beginning of the round, and join stitches in the round.

    Next round (RS):
Knit in stockinette stitch for 5 cm (2 in).

    BODY OF THE HAT

Change to size B needles and continue in stockinette stitch until the hat measures 20 cm (7 7/8 in).
Allow for the desired amount of slouch by adding or decreasing the height of the hat.

    CROWN SHAPING

Divide the stitches into 4 sections, 24 sts in each section, placing removable markers between the sections.

    Round with decreases:
*Knit to 3 sts before the marker, SL1TOG-K1-PSSO, slip marker; repeat from * to end of round.
(8 sts decreased, 88 sts remaining)

    Next round with decreases:
*Knit to 2 sts before the marker, SL1TOG-K1-PSSO (slipping the marker to complete the decrease, then replace the marker after the decrease is finished); repeat from * to end of round.
(8 sts decreased, 80 sts remaining)
Repeat the previous round with decreases until there are 8 stitches left.

    FINISHING

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of 15 cm (6 in). Using a tapestry needle, thread the end of the yarn through the remaining stitches and pull tight. Secure the yarn. Weave in the end.
