A cute and very popular style of children's hat – with ears on top and bottom. The knitting is so simple that even a beginner can handle it.
The hat is knitted in two layers with a lining.

For a head circumference of 52 cm.
Materials:
yarn Merino Superior (100% merino wool, 175m/50g) – in two strands;
needles No. 4 and No. 5.
Gauge: 21 sts = 10 cm.
If you have different yarn, you need to make a swatch and measure your gauge. The model in the photo is a girl with a head size of 52 cm.
Calculate the number of stitches for casting on based on the gauge: 52*21/100=109 sts.
From the resulting number, subtract 15% for the stretch of the knitted fabric. This means that for the hat we need to cast on 92 sts + 1 st to join in a circle.
Measure the height of the hat. To do this, use a measuring tape to measure the distance from the forehead (where the hat should end) to the nape of the neck (see photo). Divide this number by 2 to get the depth of the hat. In our case, 36/2=18 cm.
Knitting the upper layer of the hat
Using needles No. 4 with 2 strands, cast on 92 sts + 1 st to join in a circle and knit ribbing *2 knit, 2 purl* for about 18 rows or 5-6 cm.
Then switch to No. 4 needles and distribute the pattern as follows: 15 knit, 3 purl, 4 sts for a cable leaning to the right, 2 purl, 4 sts for a cable leaning to the left, 3 purl, 14 knit, and 46 knit for the back of the hat.
Cable leaning to the right – slip 2 sts onto a spare needle behind the work, knit 2 knit, then knit the slipped sts.
Cable leaning to the left: slip 2 sts onto a spare needle in front of the work, knit 2 knit, then knit the slipped sts.
Crossings should be done every 5 rows.
Knit the pattern straight without decreases to the required depth of the hat (in our case, this is 18 cm). Close all stitches in one go and sew along the edge in a way convenient for you so that the pattern is centered.
How to knit ears for the children's hat
Under the upper ears, knit the lower ones. How to determine where to place the ears – leave 34 sts for the front, then mark 20 sts for the ears and leave 34 sts for the back. Pick up 20 sts from the edge and knit as follows:
Row 1: 20 purl;
Row 2: edge, 2 knit, 2 together leaning to the right, 12 knit, 2 together leaning to the left, 1 knit, edge (2 sts decreased);
Row 3: 18 purl, and so on.
Knit in the same rhythm, making decreases in every even row until there are 4 sts left on the needles. On these sts, make a cord. To do this, knit 4 sts on double-pointed needles. Then, without turning the work, move them to the other end of the needles and knit 4 knit again. Continue this until the tie reaches 20-25 cm.
Knit the second piece similarly.
Lining
From the cast-on edge, pick up the same number of stitches from the back loop. The lower part is knitted exactly like the upper part but 1-2 rows shorter.
