In the master class I will knit for HC — 55–58 cm, using Lana Gatto Maxi Soft yarn, in one strand.
Needles size 3.5 — hat, size 4 and 4.5 — scarf.
My gauge:
Gauge for ribbing 1x1 (needles size 3.5), in a slightly stretched form:
23 sts in 10 cm
23 sts / 10 cm = 2.3 sts/cm
In 1 cm — 2.3 sts.
2.357 (HC) = 131.1 sts. Subtract about 10% (since the ribbing stretches well) for the ribbing stretch and round to 120 sts.
The number of stitches must be a multiple of 8! Since the pattern repeat is 8 sts.
If you do not hit this gauge (I knit very tightly), you can use larger or smaller needles, or you can add or subtract 8 sts.
Calculations:
R. 49–54 cm
Hat:
Needles — size 3.5.
Number of stitches — 112 sts + 1 st.
Ribbing 1x1 (at the start of work, before the pattern) — 5 rows.
Pattern repeat — 8 sts, in height — 11 rows.
Height of the hat before decreases (from start) — 27.5–28 cm
Total height of the hat — 35–35.5 cm
Scarf:
Needles — size 4 (lower and upper pattern), size 3.5 (stockinette).
Number of stitches — 120+1 st.
Height of scarf — 26 cm
R. 55–58 cm (in the master class I knit for this size)
Hat:
Needles — size 3.5.
Number of stitches — 120+1 st.
Ribbing 1x1 (at the start of work, before the pattern) — 6 rows.
Pattern repeat — 8 sts, in height — 11 rows.
Height of the hat before decreases (from the start) — 28.5–29 cm
Total height of the hat — 36–36.5 cm
Scarf:
Needles — size 4.5 and 4.
Number of stitches — 120+1 st.
Height of scarf — 27 cm
Begin knitting the hat:
See video — 1.
With needles size 3.5, cast on 120 sts + 1 st, in the classic way.
Join the knitting in the round.
Knit ribbing 1x1.
Row 1:
First stitch — knit, through the front loop.
Second stitch — purl, through the front loop.
Row 2:
First knit stitch — knit, through the front loop.
Second purl stitch — purl, through the back loop.
The remaining rows are worked the same as Row 2. In total, knit 1x1 rib for 6 rows.
Knit the pattern:
Row 1 (with repeats):
First knit stitch and second purl stitch — slip onto an extra needle and keep the stitches behind the work.
Third knit stitch — knit, through the front loop.
Return the slipped stitches to the needle; the first knit stitch — knit through the front loop.
Second purl stitch — purl, through the back loop.
Fourth purl stitch — purl.
Fifth knit stitch — slip onto an auxiliary needle, hold it in front of the work.
Sixth purl stitch — knit, through the back loop.
Seventh knit stitch — purl, through the front loop.
Then return the fifth knit stitch to the needle and knit it through the front loop.
Eighth purl stitch — purl.
We have knitted one pattern repeat consisting of 8 stitches. The remaining repeats to the end of the row are worked similarly.
Rows 2–4: Knit in ribbing 1x1, following the pattern.
Row 5: Knit with repeats, exactly as Row 1.
Row 6: Knit in ribbing 1x1, following the pattern.
Row 7: Knit with repeats.
Rows 8–10: Knit in ribbing 1x1, following the pattern.
Row 11: Knit with repeats.
We have knitted a pattern repeat in height consisting of 11 rows.
Then continue knitting the hat in ribbing 1x1, to a height of about 28.5–29 cm.
Binding off the hat:
See video — 2.
Having knitted the hat to the required height, we will proceed to close the crown.
Shift the row back by one stitch so that the first stitch becomes purl.
Divide the row into 4 equal parts, 30 sts in each, mark with markers.
1st row (with decreases):
First purl stitch — turn, then insert the needle into the 2nd knit stitch and, together with the 1st purl stitch, turn again, swapping their places. Next, knit them with the 3rd purl stitch — three together knitwise, through the back loop.
Then knit the stitches following the pattern, with 1x1 rib until the next marker.
Similarly perform decreases in the other three parts.
2nd row: all stitches in pattern.
3rd row (with decreases):
Again move the last stitch of the previous row to the start of the next row (this is done in every row with decreases).
Insert the needle into the 2nd knit stitch and, together with the 1st knit stitch, turn, swapping their places.
3rd knit stitch — turn. Knit all three stitches together — knitwise, through the back loop.
Then knit the stitches following the pattern until the next marker.
Similarly perform decreases in the other three parts.
4th row: all stitches in pattern.
Then repeat the 1st and 3rd rows with decreases; after each row with decreases, knit a row in pattern.
Knit until there are 16 stitches left on the needles.
Next, transfer the remaining stitches to a needle and draw up the crown tight, tuck the end.
Then turn the hat inside out — now the right side is facing out.
Make a turned edge to the desired height (about 8.5–9 cm).
Knit the snood:
See Video 3.
Knit the snood in one strand, like the hat.
The bottom and top pattern — needles size 4.5.
Stockinette stitch — needles size 4.
Cast on on needles 4.5 the same number of stitches as for the hat — 120 sts + 1.
Join in the round.
Knit rib 1x1 — 4 rounds.
Then knit the pattern of 11 rows, exactly as in the hat.
Then switch to needles size 4, and knit stockinette to a height of about 22 cm.
Then again needles 4.5 and the upper pattern (the same as at the beginning).
Then 2 rows of ribbing 1x1, and in the 3rd row the purl stitches are knit in the classical way, so that the back wall becomes the front.
Binding off the snood stitches by factory method:
Cut a piece of yarn about 3.5 times the length of a row, thread it onto a needle.
Sew the knit and purl stitches together in pairs:
— when sewing knit stitches, the yarn is in front of the work;
— when sewing purl stitches — at the back of the work.
Sew the knit stitches together:
1st knit stitch — to the right, behind the front wall, slip off.
3rd knit stitch — to the left, behind the front wall, pull the yarn.
Sew the purl stitches together:
2nd purl stitch — to the right, behind the back wall, slip off.
4th purl stitch — to the left, behind the back wall, pull the yarn.
Thus we sew all the stitches.
We join the last to the first.
Pull tight and hide the end from the wrong side.
Carry out the set's finishing wash:
-
Soak the hat and snood for 5 minutes in water at 30°C with a wool-specific detergent.
-
Rinse in clean water, then place the set in a pillowcase.
-
Put in the washing machine on the SPIN cycle.
-
Take out the set, straighten it, lay it out on a horizontal dry surface and dry.
All done! The set is ready!
