At first glance, the pattern "bear paws" may seem quite complicated to knit. However, this is not the case at all. The difference of this lacy pattern from many others is that the stitches in the wrong rows continue the pattern; they are knitted according to the scheme, not according to the drawing as is most familiar, and in them, just like in the front rows, yarn overs are knitted.
Often, one can encounter typos in the charts, which is particularly frustrating for beginner knitters. However, if you take a good look at the pattern, you can easily take any of the charts as a basis. (In the chart, front stitches are marked with a vertical tick in the front rows, and purl stitches in the wrong rows).
If we look at the pattern, we will see two "zones" in the basis of the drawing, alternating with each other in a checkerboard pattern.
The first zone, which indeed resembles "paws" (let's conditionally call it zone No. 1), consists of 12 stitches and is knitted simply: we repeat the combination three times: 2 knit, yarn over, 2 knit together with a yarn over. In the wrong row – we also repeat three times: 2 purl, yarn over, 2 purl together.
The second zone (let's conditionally call it zone No. 2) consists of 18 stitches. Here, it is necessary to remember the sequence of knitting 4 rows (including the wrong rows), which are repeated 3 times. (Sometimes 4-5 times, depending on what pattern we want to achieve).
]
1st row: yarn over, 4 knit, 2 knit together with a yarn over, 6 knit, 2 knit together, 4 knit, yarn over.
2nd row (wrong): 1 purl, yarn over, 4 purl, 2 purl together, 4 purl, 2 purl through the back loop (also called twisted), 4 purl, yarn over, 1 purl;
3rd row: 2 knit, yarn over, 4 knit, 2 knit together with a yarn over, 2 knit, 2 knit together, 4 knit, yarn over, 2 knit.
4th row (wrong): 3 purl, yarn over, 4 purl, 2 purl together, 2 purl together through the back loop, 4 purl, yarn over, 3 purl.
The 2 purl stitches (which are knit as knit stitches in the wrong row) separate zone No. 1 and zone No. 2 in the pattern, serving as a certain guide and helping us to always clearly separate the knitting of one zone from another in each row, as well as track errors while knitting.
After a certain number of knitted rows, the zones change places in a checkerboard pattern.
