In this article, I will present a knitting pattern for braids and my description, and at the end, I will add a link to a video where you can watch the knitting of this hat.
The hat is knitted for a head circumference of 58 cm, with a height of about 20 cm.
To knit the hat, 150 grams of yarn (knitting with 2 threads) Gazzal XL Baby Wool (50g/150m) were required. Circular needles No. 4.5 were used for the ribbing and No. 6 for the main pattern.
Braids pattern scheme:
The rapport of the pattern in width is 12 stitches. The scheme shows only the front/odd rows, but when knitting the hat in the round, every second row should be knitted according to the stitch pattern.
At first, I knitted a sample of the braid pattern with needles No. 6. From the sample, it is visible that the ribbing with such needles looks loose. To make the ribbing of the hat tight, it is necessary to use needles that are a few sizes smaller – I used needles No. 4.5.
Description of knitting the hat for size 58:
To start knitting the hat, cast on 96 stitches. After casting on stitches with needles No. 4.5, join the round, then knit 10 rows in 1x1 rib for a height of about 5 cm.
After the ribbing, knit the first row with knit stitches using needles No. 6 and after every 8th stitch, make an increase by lifting the stitch from the row below. A total of 12 increases will be made, bringing the number of stitches to 108, which corresponds to 9 repetitions of the pattern in the row.
Next, knit the main part of the hat with the braid pattern according to the scheme to the desired height.
In this example, the rapport of the pattern in height is repeated 3 times. When knitting the 4th rapport, in the 3rd row the decreases for the crown begin – knit the last 2 knit stitches of each rapport together as one knit. A total of 9 decreases in the row. Make the decreases for the crown in every row at the beginning of each rapport or at the end according to the pattern. When the number of stitches is reduced to a minimum, cut the yarn, thread the end through the stitches, and gather the crown.
