Techniques

TUBULAR CAST-OFF:

CR 1: (1 knit, sl1) to the end of the round

CR 2: (sl1, 1 purl) to the end of the round

Join the stitches using a stocking seam "loop to loop"

INSTRUCTIONS:

SECTION 1: CAST ON AND CIRCULAR NECKBAND

Using the standard method of casting on stitches (with the “long-tail”), cast on 200 stitches with smaller needles. Join in the round neatly without twisting the edge. Place the NKR marker (center back).

Knit according to CHART 1 for all sizes (charts and written instructions see pages 8-24).

After completing CHART 1, there will be 320 stitches on the needles.

Continue using CHART 2 for your size, adding new DM where needed (you will be knitting 20 chart repeats for each KR).

Knit 18 (19, 23, 27, 30) repeats of CHART 2 before dividing for body and sleeves. This will give 4-5 cm of ease for the depth of the armhole.

Total: 320 (360, 400, 440, 480) stitches.

NOTE: try on the sweater before dividing the body and sleeves to determine whether you have the desired length of the yoke. You can adjust the yoke length by adding or reducing the number of rows of CHART 2 worked before the separation row. Completing the back insert (Section 4) before the separation row will help you decide on the desired yoke length.

SECTION 2:

DIVISION INTO BODY AND SLEEVE.
KNITTING THE BODY AND HEM

When dividing, you will have 6 chart repeats on the front and back and 4 chart repeats for each sleeve. For each underarm section, cast on the number of stitches required for a new chart repeat minus 1 stitch, so you will have 14 chart repeats for the body and 5 for each sleeve.

KR1: knit 3 repeats of CHART 2 (48(54,60,66,72) stitches), place the next 4 repeats of CHART 2, excluding the last purl stitch on the holder (63(71,79,87,95) stitches), cast on 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) stitches for the underarm, 1 purl, knit 6 repeats of CHART 2 (96(108, 120, 132, 144) stitches, place the next 4 repeats of CHART 2, excluding the last purl stitch on the holder (63 (71, 79, 87, 95) stitches), cast on 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) stitches for the underarm, 1 purl, knit 3 repeats of CHART 2 (48 (54, 60, 66, 72) stitches). On needles 224 (252, 280, 308, 336) stitches.

Continue knitting CHART 2 on all body stitches; you will have 14 chart repeats.

FOR SIZES 1 AND 2: after completing 3 repeats in height of CHART 2 (marked in red), switch to CHART 3 before the ribbing.

FOR SIZE 3: after completing 2 full repeats of CHART 2 (marked in red) plus CHART 2 repeats 10–34, switch to CHART 3 before the ribbing.

FOR SIZE 4: after completing 2 full repeats in the height of CHART 2 (marked in red) plus CHART 2 repeats 10–35, switch to CHART 3 before the ribbing.

FOR SIZE 5: after completing 2 full repeats in the height of CHART 2 (marked in red) plus CHART 2 repeats 11–37, switch to CHART 3 before the ribbing.

Total on needles: 60 (60, 60, 60, 60) stitches.

After finishing CHART 4, switch to smaller needles and knit 10 cm of the cuff in twisted rib and bind off, using the tubular bind-off method (see technique on page 4).

The second sleeve is knitted similarly.

SECTION 4: BACK NECKLINE INSERT

On the right side, fold the scalloped edge forward to access the stitches on the IS that run in a straight line parallel to the valley between each scallop, and with smaller needles pick up and knit 43 stitches from the center of the right shoulder to the center back, place marker for NKR, pick up and knit 1 stitch from the very center back (the deepest point), place marker, pick up and knit 43 stitches from the center back to the center of the left shoulder (total 87 stitches). Turn the work and knit purl stitches to M, SM, 1 knit, SM, purl to end of row.

ROW 1 (RS): 1 knit, 2 together knitwise to the left, knit to 2 stitches before the marker, 2 together knitwise to the right, marker, 1 purl, marker, 2 together knitwise to the left, knit to the 3 last stitches, 2 together knitwise to the right, 1 knit. (4 stitches decreased, on needles 83 stitches.)

ROW 2 (WS): 1 purl, 2 together purlwise to the left, purl to marker, marker, 1 knit, marker, purl to the last 3 stitches, 2 together purlwise to the right, 1 purl. (2 stitches decreased, 81 stitches.)

Repeat rows 1 and 2 another 12 times (to have 9 stitches left). Finish the insert as follows:

ROW 1 (RS): 1 knit, 2 together knitwise to the left, 1 knit, marker, 1 purl, marker, 1 knit, 2 together knitwise to the right, 1 knit. (2 stitches decreased, 7 stitches remaining.)

ROW 2 (WS): 1 purl, 2 together purlwise to the left, remove marker, 1 knit, remove marker, 2 together purlwise to the right, 1 purl. (2 stitches decreased, 5 stitches remaining.)

ROW 3: 1 knit, 3 together knitwise to the left, 1 knit. (2 stitches decreased, 3 stitches remaining.)

ROW 4: 3 together purlwise to the left, cut the yarn.

FINISHING

Weave in ends and block to measurements. The sweater is ready!

CHARTS AND WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS

NOTES for CHART 1:

• You will knit 4 repeats of the chart for each KR, inside which 16 stitches, marked in red, will be repeated 3 times.

• Place DM after each repeat (and smaller DMs to separate repeats within a single chart repeat) for easier tracking.

• Start with smaller needles. FOR ALL SIZES, EXCEPT SIZE 1: SWITCH TO LARGER NEEDLES after KR 19. FOR SIZE 1: knit all CHART 1 rounds on smaller needles.

• Make sure CHART 1 rows 1–19 are tighter than the rest of the yoke section, i.e., one chart repeat (16 stitches) should be about 5.5 cm wide. Additional markers will help with following the chart.

• Knit the chart from right to left, bottom to top.
