Before knitting the sweater, it is important to calculate the knitting density and the number of stitches to start knitting the yoke from the neckline. You also need to consider the number of repeats on the yoke to distribute the knitting into parts of the sweater – sleeves, back, and front – without disrupting the pattern.

The pattern for knitting sweaters with a round yoke is always approximately the same. The sizes on the pattern below are suggested for knitting a sweater in size 48. To calculate the stitches, you will need to make a sample of stockinette stitch and calculate the knitting density.

For knitting the sweater, you will need 450-500 grams of yarn and circular needles size 4.5.

Before starting to knit for the neckline, it is necessary to calculate how many stitches to cast on so that the neckline is the desired width, not too narrow, and the head should pass through freely, and not too wide. To do this, measure the circumference of the head; the initial row should be about this length.

In the sample, the knitting density is 20 stitches for a width of 10 cm, so for a neckline with a circumference of 53 cm, you need to cast on 110 stitches. Since one repeat of the yoke pattern in width is 10 stitches, the calculated initial row of 110 stitches will include 11 repeats of the yoke pattern.

After knitting 60 rows of the yoke according to the pattern, each repeat of the pattern will expand by 10 stitches and will consist of 20 stitches. In total, at the end of knitting the yoke, there will be 220 stitches on the needles. It is not difficult to calculate the knitting density and determine if the circumference of the yoke will be enough for the body circumference around the armholes.

The armhole is the place where the knitting of the yoke ends, and then the knitting is divided into the main parts of the sweater – 2 repeats or 40 stitches will go for each sleeve, for the back you need to leave 3 repeats or 60 stitches, and for the front 4 repeats or 80 stitches. More stitches are allocated for the front part of the sweater to accommodate the bust volume.

Description of knitting the yoke:

To start knitting the yoke, cast on 110 stitches on circular needles. Join the cast-on row into a ring and continue knitting in the round, making 5 rows of ribbing 1x1, alternating one knit and one purl stitch for the neckline border.

Next, move on to the yoke knitting pattern starting from the 6th row. In the first row of the yoke, distribute the stitches by repeats, placing a marker every 10 stitches to avoid losing track of the pattern; repeat 11 times: purl, 3 knit, purl, 5 knit.

In the 7th row, work the lace elements, repeating 11 times: 1 purl, yarn over, 3 knit together with a yarn over, yarn over, purl, knit, yarn over, 3 knit together with a yarn over, yarn over, knit.

Rows 8, 9, and 10 are knitted the same way, repeating the repeat 11 times: purl, 3 knit, purl, 5 knit. While the number of stitches in the repeats remains the same.

In the 11th row, work the lace elements again, repeating 11 times: purl, yarn over, 3 knit together with a yarn over, yarn over, purl, yarn over, knit, 3 knit together with a yarn over, knit, yarn over.

In the 12th row, knit as in the 6th row.

In the 13th row, work the lace elements only on the second part of the repeats, repeat 11 times: purl, 3 knit, purl, knit, yarn over, 3 knit together with a yarn over, yarn over, knit.

In the 14th row, knit as in the 6th row.

In the 15th row, the first increase of stitches occurs in each repeat due to yarn overs; knit each repeat: purl, yarn over, 3 knit together with a yarn over, yarn over, purl, yarn over, 5 knit, yarn over.

In the 16th row, knit 11 repeats, repeating: purl, 3 knit, purl, 7 knit.

Continue knitting the yoke up to the 60th row according to the pattern.

The finished yoke needs to be divided into parts of the sweater, setting aside stitches separately for the two sleeves, the back, and the front. Try on the knitted yoke before continuing to knit the sweater to ensure that it fits the figure, reaches the armholes, does not sag, and is not too tight.
